Baldwin-Wallace Secures 38th Consecutive Winning Season with a 28-0 Victory Over Heidelberg

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College football team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College, 28-0, today (October 16) before 1,002 fans at Frost-Kalnow Stadium in Tiffin, Ohio.

With this win, the Yellow Jackets have put together 38 consecutive winning seasons starting back in 1966, the nation’s longest streak. B-W remains undefeated and in a tie for first place in the OAC at 6-0 overall, 5-0 in the OAC. With their loss, the Heidelberg Student Princes fall to 0-6 overall, 0-5 in the OAC.

The game remained scoreless after one period of play and until 4:43 remaining in the first half when B-W took the lead. The Yellow Jackets then added another score to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. B-W added one score in the third quarter to increase their lead to 21-0. The Jackets added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the final 28-0.

B-W opened the scoring late in the second quarter when Brandon Hedges (Oregon/ Clay) found the endzone after a three-yard run on a 74-yard drive. Aaron Redd (Swanton) tacked on the extra point to put the Yellow Jackets ahead of the Student Princes, 7-0. Sophomore backup quarterback Rob Lewis’s (Castalia/ Margaretta) 35-yard pass to Scott Kovelan (Westlake/North Olmsted) sparked the Jackets first score.

B-W extended their lead with 0:50 left in the second quarter when Hedges scored on a six-yard run. The drive began at Heidelberg’s 36-yard line after a crucial defensive stand on fourth down by the Yellow Jackets. Redd added the extra point to put Baldwin-Wallace ahead at the half, 14-0.

The Yellow Jackets opened up scoring early in the second half when B-W drove 81 yards in 3:43 to make the score 21-0. Hedges ran for his third touchdown of the afternoon, a ten-yard scamper and Redd again added the point-after-attempt.

With 6:46 left in the fourth quarter, Yellow Jacket sophomore quarterback Mike DiAngelo (Steubenville/ Senior) found senior all-american tight end Nate Wilder (Youngstown/ Cardinal Mooney) in the endzone for a six-yard touchdown pass, his fifth TD reception in six games. Redd’s PAT gave the Jackets a 28-0 advantage. The 13 play, 80 yard drive took 4:48 off the clock and was sparked by a key fourth down pass completion.

Hedges led B-W on the ground with 20 carries for 46 yards and three touchdowns. Senior tailback Ashraf Khatib (North Olmsted/ Lakewood Senior) also added 43 yards on seven carries. DiAngelo led the passing attack with 13 completions on 23 attempts for 154 yards and one touchdown. Wilder led the receiving corps with two receptions for 47 yards and one touchdown. Dave Ehrman (Strongsville) who had one reception for eight yards extended his OAC and school record for consecutive games with a reception to 38.

The Yellow Jacket defense held Heidelberg, who has not scored in its last 12 quarters at home, to 0-3 on fourth down conversions. Senior defensive end Ryan Lewis (Holland/ Springfield) led the Jackets with three sacks to increase his team-leading season total to seven. Sophomore safety Pat Birch (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) and senior safety Mike Scarcella (Strongsville/ Parma Padua) had one interception each.

B-W will be back in action next Saturday, October 23 when it will take on OAC rival Capital University at 1:30 p.m. on Professor Appreciation Day at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio.

Game Notes vs. Heidelberg

 


The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET football team will travel to Tiffin, Ohio on Saturday, October 16, 2004 to play Ohio Athletic Conference rival Heidelberg College at the Tiffin Columbian High School and Frost-Kalnow Stadium at 1:30 p.m.

 

        RADIO  -- B-W  campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, will carry the game live from from Tiffin with the pre-game show starting at 1:00 p.m.  Sports Director Dave Kich will call the play-by-play.  WBWC broadcasts all home and away Yellow Jacket games.  The live broadcast can also be heard live via the internet at www.bw.edu/athletics.
        In addition, all Yellow Jacket games, home and away, will be carried by Salem Communications via Cleveland based radio stations WHK (1420 AM), WHKW (1220 AM) or WCCD (1000 AM).  This game will be carried by WHKW (1220 AM), with the pregame show starting at 1:15 p.m. Veteran Cleveland sportscasters Adam Mendoza and Carmen Angelo call the games.

The Game -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team will look to improve to 6-0 overall and a perfect 5-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference when it travels to Tiffin to play the winless Heidelberg College Student Princes.  The Yellow Jackets will have to guard against a letdown and focus on this week's game.  The next two weeks, B-W is scheduled to play fourth-ranked Capital University on Oct. 23 and top-ranked Mount Union College on Oct. 30.
        B-W enters this game a perfect 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the OAC after beating much-improved Otterbein College, 31-24, last Saturday at The George Finnie Stadium on Homecoming.  After five games, B-W is outscoring the opposition, 134-55.  The Yellow Jackets have beaten Allegheny, Pa. College (27-14), Ohio Northern University (31-3), Wilmington College (31-7), Muskingum College (14-7) and Otterbein to start the season.  A win today would also preserve and extend B-W's streak of consecutive winning seasons to 38.  The streak is the second longest in ALL of cclle football.
        Heidelberg enters this game winless at 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the OAC following a 59-0 loss at home to Ohio Northern University last Saturday in Tiffin.  The Student Princes continue to look to rebuild their program under the direction of second-year Head Coach Brian Cochrane.

The Baldwin-Wallace College versus Heidelberg College Series -- The Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College and the Student Princes of Heidelberg College have previously met 57 times dating back to the first meeting in 1897.  This is the longest-standing series for B-W football.  The Yellow Jackets lead the series, 41-16, and have won 14 straight games, including a  48-6 win a year ago  in Berea.  Heidelberg's last win came in 1989, in Berea by the score of 17-3.

Last Year:  B-W --48, Heidelberg -- 6 in Berea, Ohio on September 25, 2003  --A year ago, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Student Princes,48-6, in Berea at The George Finnie Stadium.  B-W jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter behind a 15-yard touchdown pass from graduated quarterback Dan Larlham to current senior All-American tight end Nate Wilder (Youngstown Cardinal Mooney) and a seven-yard touchdown run by graduated running back Paul Bockmore.  TD runs by Larlham and graduated RB Randale Richmond and a TD pass from Dan Larlham to current senior wide receiver Gary Kopchak (Brook Park/ Midpark) in the second stanza gave B-W a 35-0 halftime lead. Richmond led all B-W runners with 114 yards in 15 attempts. Larlham threw TD passes to Wilder, Kopchak and current senior WR Dave Ehrman (Strongsville) and current sophomore WR Tom Murphy (Richfield/ Revere) caught a 13-yard TD pass from backup and graduated QB Tom Sutton.  Defensively, current junior All-OAC outside linebacker Justin Princehorn (Massillon/ Washington) led the team withg nine tackles and current junior defensive end Brendan Moran (Poland/ Seminary) recorded two sacks.

Scouting the Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets and B-W Statistical Leaders - After five games, Sophomore RB Brandon Hedges (Oregon Clay) tops the team with 735 rushing yards on 112 attempts (6.6 yards per carry) and seven TD. Hedges is tied for the team lead in receiving with 11 catches for 70 yards. Senior RB Ashraf Khatib (Lakewood Senior) is second in rushing with 50 yards on 14 attempts.  In passing, sophomore QB Mike DiAngelo has completed 69 of  122 passes for 56.6 percent with 749 yards and six TD with five interceptions.  He has a 116.6 QB efficency rating.  The receiving corps are led by Nate Wilder, David Peterson and senior two-time Academic All-OAC WR Dave Ehrman (Strongsville).  Peterson has 11 catches to tie Hedges for the team lead. Wilder has eight grabs for 65 yards and a team-leading four TD.  Ehrman has nine catches for a team-high 161 yards and one TD.
        Defensively, junior All-OAC outside linebacker Justin Princehorn (Massillon Washington) leads the team with 41 tackles and six pass breakups.  Junior middle linebacker Joe George (Massillon Perry) is second with 33 tackles and is one of five players with one interception. Senior All-OAC defensive end Ryan Lewis (Holland/ Springfield) has the most QB sacks with four for 23 yards in losses. He also tops the team with seven total tackles for losses of 30 yards.
        On special teams, freshman punter Kevin Soflkanics (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) is averaging an OAC-leading 44.6 yards per punt in 27 attempts with a long punt of 66 yards and 13 landing inside the opponent's 20-yard line.  Senior placekicker Aaron Redd (Swanton) is 15-of-17 in PAT kicks and three-of-five in field goal attempts to tie Wilder for second on the team in scoring with 24 points.  Freshman Brad Rhoden (Galena/ Big Walnut) tops all punt returners at 16.3 yards for six returns and kick returns at 26.0 yards for two returns.

Scouting the Heidelberg College Student Princes and Heidelberg Statistical Leaders--  After five games, sophomore tailback Brett Hastings is the Heidelberg's leading rusher with 248 yards in 98 attempts.  Unfortunately, the Student Princes have not scored a rushing TD this year. Freshman quarterback Steve West has completed 72 passes in 147 attempts for 855 yards with four TD and seven interceptions.  He also has totaled 26 rushing yards in 26 attempts.  Senior wide receiver Roc Patterson is the one of the OAC's top receivers.  He has 33 receptions (tops in the OAC) for 399 yards and two TD. Freshman WR Branden Parker is second with 25 catches for 311 yards and a TD.  Defensively, the Student Princes are led by senior linebackers  Jeff Stiffler and Will Johnson, who have 64 tackles and 44 tackles, respectively. 

B-W's LAST GAME:  On Oct. 9,  Baldwin-Wallace -- 31, Otterbein -- 24 in Berea, Ohio-- The Yellow Jackets won their fifth straight game to open the 2004 season and improved to 4-0 in the OAC with a 31-24 victory against the Otterbein Cardinals on Homecoming in Berea before 4,255 fans.  B-W led 7-0 after one quarter, it was tied 14-14 at halftime and at the end of the third quarter.  Offensively, Brandon Hedges rushed for a career-high 192 yards in 24 attempts and scored on runs of 31 and one yards, respectively. The other scores came on a 15-yard run by sophomore backup quarterback Rob Lewis (Margaretta), a three-yard pass from Mike DiAngelo to Nate Wilder and a 30-yard field goal by Aaron Redd.  Defensively, Justin Princehorn had 11 tackles and forced a fumble that led to the go-ahead TD. Sophomore defensive tackle Sam Rantucci (Richfield/ Revere) had two QB sacks and fellow sophomore DT Derek Fabry (Avon Lake) had 1.5 sacks.  On special teams, Kevin Soflkiancs set a Finnie Stadium and school-record by averaging 51.0 yards on six punts with four landing inside the 20-yard line.

HEIDELBERG'S LAST GAME:  On Oct. 9,  Ohio Northern--59 , Heidelberg --  0-- inTiffin,Ohio-- The Heidelberg College Student Princes dropped to 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the last last Saturday when they lost 59-0 to visiting Ohio Northern University at Tiffin Columbian Stadium.  Despite the loss, Heidelberg was led on the ground by Tyler Palumbo with 33 rushing yards in nine attempts and Brett Hastings had 23 yards in 16 attempts.  QB Steve West completed 11 of 25 passes for 150 yards but had three intercepted.  Dustin Dolatta led the Student Princes with four receptions for 54 yards.  Roc Patterson had three catches for 52 yards and Branden Parker had three grabs for 29 yards.  On defense, linebackers Jim Stiffler and Will Parker had 11 and nine tackles, respectively.  Punter Elliott Koch averaged 40.0 yards in nine attempts.

B-W Can Secure its 38th Straight Winning Season With a Win at Heidelberg:  THE STREAK -- With a win against Heidelberg, Baldwin-Wallace will extend its seasonal winning streak to 38 years.  The Yellow Jackets currently own a seasonal winning streak of 37 years.  The streak is second longest in all of college football as well as NCAA Division III.  B-W has not had a losing season since 1966.  Linfield (Oregon) College has the nation's longest streak at 42 years.

The National Polls -- At the time of the release of this week's notes (5:30 p.m. EST on 10/10/2004), B-W was ranked eighth by the AFCA (America Football Coaches Association) in its Oct. 5 poll, 10th in The Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette poll and 12th by the d3football.com InterNet Web Site pollsters.

Senior Wide Receiver Dave Ehrman Extends His Consecutive Games With a Reception Record -- Senior WR Dave Ehrman has caught a pass in every game of his collegiate career --  37 straight games.  With his one catch last week, in a 31-24 win versus Otterbein, Ehrman extended his own B-W and Ohio Athletic Conference mark of having at least one catch in every game of his college career.

Hedges Second Best -- Brandon Hedges had an 88-yard run in the fourth quarter in the win versus Otterbein.  The run was the second longest in Finnie Stadium history, eclipsed only by Danell Owens' 91-yard run versus Ohio Northern in 1998.  Hedges 192-yard effort was also a career-high.

Hedges is the First Ever to Win the B-W Player of the Game Trifecta -- Brandon Hedges is the first Yellow Jacket player to ever win its Player of the Game trifecta.  Hedges is this year's Dick Miller Community Night Player of the Game, the ASl Koran Temple/ Shriners' Player of the Game and the Frank Ropollo Homecoming Player of the Game.

More on Brandon Hedges -- In three career starts at Finnie Stadium, Brandon Hedges is averaging 172.0 rushing yards per game.  He had 158 yards versus Allegheny on September 4, 166 yards against Ohio Northern on Sept. 25 and 192 yards versus Otterbein.  That is 516 total yards.

Soflkiancs Sets B-W and Finnie Stadium Record -- Freshman punter Kevin Soflkinacs (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) set both a B-W and Finnie Stadium record by averaging 51.0 yards for six punts in the win versus Otterbein.  He had four punts land inside the 20-yard line.  The mark broke the previous record of a 47.8 yards per punt by former All-American and Academic All-American Shawn Gorman in 1987.  Soflkiancs is averaging an OAC-leading 44.6 yards for 27 punts and 13 have landed inside the opponents 20-yard line.

Regular Season Finale Will Be Televised -- B-W's regular season finale at John Carroll University on Saturday, November 13 in University heights (a 1:30 p.m. kickoff) will be televised throughout Northeast Ohio and into both Central Ohio and Western Pennsylvania.  The game will be produced by Classic Teleproductions of Twinsburg, Ohio and aired on PBS channels 45 and 49 with the potential of reaching 2.4 million homes.

The Yellow Jackets Are Going to Spain in May -- Members of this year's Yellow Jacket football team will travel to Spain next May (2005) to travel to country for 10 days, including playing a game against a club team.  More details on the trip will follow during this season.
