The Game -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team begins the 2004 season seeking its 38th consecutive winning season. Last season, the Yellow Jackets had a 10-2 overall and 8-1 Ohio Athletic Conference record for their 37th consecutive winning season and advanced to the NCAA Division III Playoffs. This year, B-W is picked to finish third in the OAC and enters the preseason ranked nationally.
B-W vs. Allegheny Series Notes -- The Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College and the Gators of Allegheny College have previously met twice. The first time was in 2002 in Meadville, Pennsylvania as B-W defeated Allegheny, 22-2, in the season oppener for both teams. A year ago, B-W opened the season with the Gators and won in Berea, 45-26 before 6,555 fans at The George Finnie Stadium.
Last Year: B-W --45, Allegheny --26 in Berea, Ohio on September 6, 2003 --A year ago, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Gators, 45-26, in Berea in the season-opener for both schools. B-W led 21-0 after one quarter, 38-10 at halftime and by as much as 45-10 with 8:36 left in the third quarter.
The B-W offense piled up 532 yards of offense in the contest, including 407 on the ground. Graduated All-American running back Mark Anders led the Yellow Jacket offense with 167 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries. In addition, graduated All-OAC quarterback Dan Larlham ran for 96 yards in 15 attempts with two TD and completed nine of 16 passes for 125 yards and another score. On defense, All-American safety Greg Koch topped B-W with seven tackles. Current senior two-time Academic All-OAC wide receiver Dave Ehrman (Strongsville) led B-W with two catches for 36 yards. Allegheny was led by graduated QB Bubba Smith as he ran for 39 yards and completed 13 of 28 passes for 190 yards and three TD.
Scouting the Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets - B-W returns 30 letterman and 10 starters in 2004. Leading the way on defense will be junior linebackers Justin Princehorn (Massillon/ Washington) and Joe George (Massillon/ Perry). A year ago, both players recorded more than 100 tackles and had outstanding seasons. Princehorn, who was also a second-team All-OAC choice, was second on the team with 104 tackles, including 12 for loss. He also had two sacks, intercepted three passes and broke up four others. George had 102 stops and has been a fixture at middle linebacker since the second game of his freshman year. The defensive line should be B-W's strength despite the loss of All-American end Nate Mitchell (13 sacks and 26 tackles for loss in 2003). Back are senior All-OAC end Ryan Lewis (Holland/ Springfield) and three-year varsity contributor Rick Schontz (Butler, Pa.). Overall, 10 of the top 12 linemen are back. In the secondary, look for senior Academic All-OAC cornerback Justin Andes (Canal Fulton/ Canton Central Catholic) and senior safety and co-captain Mike Scarcella (Strongsville/ Parma Padua) to lead the way.
The receiving corps should be the strength of the offense. Led Ehrman, a four-year starter at WR, and All-American tight end Nate Wilder (Youngstown/ Cardinal Mooney), B-W should have a strong passing attack with a number of competent receivers. Joining Ehrman as returning WRs are senior Gary Kopchak (Brook Park/ Midpark), junior David Peterson (Cuyahoga Falls/ Walsh Jesuit) and sophomore Tom Murphy (Richfield Revere). On the offensive line, B-W returns two starters as well as a number of players who contributed a year ago. Leading the way will be senior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC pick Tom Kovacevich (Strongsville). Senior tackle Josh Jameyson (Wellington) is the other returning starter and is a co-captain. Look for junior Mike DiAngelo (Steubenville) to start at QB with a host of players contributing at both running back and fullback.
Scouting the Allegheny (Pa.) College Gators -- Allegheny returns 47 lettermen and 11 starters in 2004. On offense, the Gators graduated all of their skill position players and four linemen and senior TE Evan Kormos (seven catches for 77 yards) is back. Finding a QB, two RBs and at least two receivers was a priority for third-year Head Coach Mark Matlak during the preseason. On defense, AC returns six starters, two each on the line, at linebacker and in the secondary. The two top players are All-NCAC cornerback Steve Williams, who had 68 tackles last year, and safety Adam Klimas, who had 63 stops.
Common Thread -- Both teams do not have a returning kicker or punter.
The Yellow Jacket Notebook
The Seasonal Winning Streak -- Baldwin-Wallace College has a seasonal winning streak of 37 years. The streak is second longest in all of college football as well as NCAA Division III. B-W has not had a losing season since 1966. Linfield (Oregon) College has the nation's longest streak.

OAC Media Day -- At the annual Ohio Athletic Conference Media Day, hosted this year at the Quest Convention Center in Powell, Ohio on July 28, B-W was picked to finish third in the conference by both the OAC coaches and by the media who cover the OAC. Defending champion Mount Union College was picked first and Capital University was tabbed second.
The 2004 Yellow Jacket Co-Captains -- This year's co-captains are Josh Jameyson and Mike Scarcella.
Returning All-American -- Nate Wilder earned third-team Football Gazette Division III All-American honors a year ago. He was also the first-team All-OAC and first-team All-North Region choice at TE.
Preseason All-American -- Nate Wilder has been tabbed as a preseason All-American by Lindy's, Street & Smith's and d3football.com.
Ehrman Looks to Continue Toward Record Streak -- Senior WR Dave Ehrman has caught a pass in every game of his collegiate career -- 32 games. Ehrman needs to catch a pass in each of his first four games to break the mark by former All-American Lance Yandell of catching at least one pass in 35 consecutive games.
Returning All-Ohio Athletic Conference Players -- B-W returns four All-Ohio Athletic Conference players. They are first-team All-OAC TE Nate Wilder, second-team center Tom Kovacevich, senior-team DE Ryan Lewis and second-team linebacker Justin Princehorn.
Returning Academic All-OAC and CoSIDA Academic All-District IV Players -- Three Yellow Jackets return as Academic All-OAC selections. They are Dave Ehrman, Justin Andes and Tom Kovacevich. Ehrman and Andes each have made both the Academic All-OAC and Academic All-District team the past two years and Kovacevich joined the honor club a year ago. Ehrman carries a 3.7 grade point average in business administration, Andes has a 3.73 grade average in biology and pre-med and Kovacevich has a 3.756 grade average in mathematics, economics and business administration.
Three Straight Years B-W Has Had a First-Team Academic All-American -- In each of the past three years, B-W has had a first-team Academic All-American. In both 2001 and 2002, Matt Kish '03 was a first-team pick. Last year, graduate Joe Harbour '04 moved up from the third team in 2002 to become a first-team choice.
