The B-W Football Team Was Defeated 20-13 by John Carroll University Today in University Heights
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket Football team lost a heartbreaking, 20-13, decision to Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University today before 4,021 fans at the Don Shula Stadium and the Wasmer Field in University Heights.
With John Carroll leading 20-13, Yellow Jacket junior quarterback Dan Larlham (Brimfield/Walsh Jesuit H.S.) took the snap in the shotgun formation, looked to pass but then dashed for the endzone and came up one inch short as time expired. With the loss, the Yellow Jackets dropped to 2-2 overall, 1-2 in the OAC and next play OAC rival Ohio Northern University next Saturday in Berea on Homecoming at 2:00 p.m.
After John Carroll took a 6-0 lead, the Yellow Jackets tied the game on a two-yard touchdown run by junior running back Mark Anders (North Olmsted H.S.) at the 6:31 mark of the first quarter. Junior Kevin Hille's (Willoughby/Lake Catholic) extra point attempt was no good and the game was tied 6-6. John Carroll then scored at the 11:49 mark of the second qaurter and led 13-6 at half-time.
B-W dominated the third qaurter. Offensively the Yellow Jackets tied the game on a 10-yard run by Larlham at the 5:14 mark. Sophomore Aaron Redd's (Swanton) conversion kick tied the score at 13-13. Defensively the Yellow Jackets held John Carroll to nine plays in three possessions for a total of two-yards of total offense.
John Carroll then scored the winning touchdown on a 15 play, 98-yard drive with 1:33 left in the game.
Offensively for the Yellow Jackets, Anders led the running game with 20 carries for 80 yards including his touchdown run. Larlham completed 20-34 passes for 206 yards. His leading receivers were sophomore wide receiver Dave Erhman (Strongsville) who caught four passes for 49 yards, senior wideout Dave LaBahn (Strongsville), grabbed four for 48 yards and sophomore Gary Kopchak (Brookpark/Midpark H.S.) caught four for 44 yards.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET football team travels to University Heights, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at Don Shula Stadium and on Wasmer Field on Saturday, October 5 at 1:30 p.m. This is the fourth game of the regular season. The winner will take home the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl trophy.
RADIO -- B-W campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, will carry the game live from University Heights with the pregame show starting at 1:15 p.m. Senior Dave Droes will call the play-by-play and junior Jon Holko will add the color analysis. The Pregame Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team will look to win its second straight game when it travels to University Heights to play nationally-ranked and cross-town rival John Carroll University.
B-W enters the game with a 2-1 record after beating OAC rival Heidelberg College last Saturday in Tiffin, 47-6. To date, the Yellow Jackets have beaten Allegheny (Pa.) College (22-2), lost to two-time defending national champion and number one-ranked Mount Union College (28-21) and beat Heidelberg.
JCU enters the game with a perfect 3-0 record following a 33-7 victory against Ohio Northern University in Ada. To date, the Blue Streaks have beaten Catholic University of Washington, D.C. (56-7), Wilmington College (40-0) and ONU (33-7) and outscored the opposition, 129-14.
B-W vs. John Carroll Series Notes -- The Baldwin-Wallace and John Carroll series dates back to 1923 and includes games in the "Big Four" (B-W, JCU, Case Tech and Western Reserve University), independent contests and now OAC games. The Yellow Jackets lead the all-time series between the two schools, 19-18-4, but JCU has won the past two meetings, including last year's 31-14 triumph in Berea.
The Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy -- The "Battle for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl Trophy" was established in 1989 by former Baldwin-Wallace College Alumni Director Ted Theodore '51. The trophy is a plaque with a rock shaped like a football. The rock, found along the banks of the Cuyahoga River, is painted brown like a football. In addition, the flags of both schools are displayed as is a plaque that indicates the winner each year. The winner of the game takes the trophy home. B-W leads the Gold Bowl series, 7-6, but JCU has won two straight and three of the last four games.
Last Year in Berea: John Carroll -- 31, Baldwin-Wallace -- 17-- The Blue Streaks defeated the Yellow Jackets at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea, 31-14, before 6,150 fans.
B-W scored first on a 40-yard TD pass from current junior quarterback Dan Larlham (Brimfield/ Walsh Jesuit) to current senior wide receiver Dave LaBahn (Strongsville), but the kick failed and B-W led, 6-0. John Carroll, led by current senior All-American QB Tom Arth, then scored the next 24 points to lead, 24-6, entering the final quarter. Another Larlham TD pass and a two-point conversion pass closed the score to 24-14, but JCU scored again to put the contest out of reach.
Arth led the JCU attack as he completed 22 of 34 passes for 235 yards and ran for another 86 on the ground and with three TD. B-W was led by graduated outside linebacker, Dave Schierbaum, who had 12 total tackles, including four for loss and a QB sack.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets -- The Yellow Jackets are led offensively by Dan Larlham, junior running back Mark Anders (North Olmsted) and the wide receiver tandem of Dave LaBahn and Dave Ehrman (Strongsville). On defense, senior end Rick Schontz (Butler, Pa./ Butler) and All-OAC defensive backs Tom DeLuca (Norwalk) and Greg Koch (Olmsted Falls) are the key players. The special teams are also solid with Hille, junior punter Rob Becker (Dover) and return specialists Tom DeLuca, Mark Anders and Matt Walker (New Middletown/ Springfield Local).
In B-W's Last Game: Baldwin-Wallace -- 47, Heidelberg -- 6 in Tiffin on September 28 -- The Yellow Jackets defeated OAC rival Heidelberg, 47-6, in Tiffin at Tiffin Columbian Stadium on Saturday.
Leading the way for B-W was Dan Larlham as he accounted for 347 yards of total offense as he completed 19 of 25 passes for 295 yards with four touchdowns and ran for 52 yards in eight attempts, including an eight-yard TD run. Larlham threw TD passes of 18 and 51 yards to sophomore tight end Mike Brosovich (Orwell/ Grand Valley), a nine-yarder to Dave Ehrman and a 43-yarder on a screen pass to senior running back Kyle Obendorf (Wadsworth). In addition, sophomore RB Michael Phillip (Wickliffe) scored on a 24-yard run, junior fullback Jim Abbott (Magnolia/ Sandy Valley) scored on a 27-yard run, junior starting placekicker Kevin Hille (Willoughby Hills/ Lake Catholic) made four of five extra point kicks and backup Aaron Redd (Swanton) converted one of two. Phillip topped all runners with 53 yards in eight attempts, and Dave LaBahn had a career-high 10 catches for 118 yards.
On defense, B-W limited Heidelberg to 208 yards of total offense, including just 26 in the second half and minus three in the third quarter. Leading the way were junior safety Jeff Fox (Willoughby South) with 10 total tackles and senior outside linebacker Bryan Parobek (Berea), who had eights tackles, including four for losses and three QB sacks for minus 31 yards.
B-W Statistical Leaders -- Offensively, Dan Larlham has completed 39 of 60 passes for 503 yards with five TD. On the ground, he has rushed 37 times for 198 yards and three TD. Also in the backfield, Mark Anders is the leading rusher with 234 yards in 36 attempts with two TD, and senior Randale Richmond (Akron North) has 17 carries for 91 yards. The receiving corps are topped by Dave LaBahn with 14 catches for 164 yards.
Defensively, Greg Koch is the top tackler with 32 total stops, including 16 solo tackles. Jeff Fox is second with 29 tackles and has the most assisted tackles with 18. Junior outside linebacker Nate Mitchell (Butler, Pa./ Butler) is third with 24 stops. Senior tackle Rob Wittensoldner (Alliance Marlington) leads the team with eight tackles for losses of 29 yards, Bryan Parobek has the most QB sacks with three for minus 31 yards and Koch has the most pass breakups with three.
Scouting the Opponent: John Carroll University -- The Blue Streaks of John Carroll have the nation's best Division III quarterback in Tom Arth, a number of outstanding receivers who are led by seniors Jeff Lerner and Adam Therrien and a close to 1,000-yard rusher in Ryan DeGeorge. JCU's offensive attack is potent. On the defensive side of the ball the Streaks are led by Chris Cubero and strong safety Liam Stull.
In JCU's Last Game: John Carroll -- 33, Ohio Northern -- 7 -- in Ada on September 28 -- The Blue Streaks scored the first 33 points in Ada enroute to a 33-7 victory against Ohio Northern University at War Memorial Stadium. Tom Arth completed 27 of 45 passes for 319 yards and three TD, Jeff Lerner caught 11 passes for 142 yards and a TD and both Adam Therrien and Brian Shellito also caught TD passes. Ryan DeGeorge had 52 rushing yards in 12 attempts with a TD. Overall, JCU outgained ONU, 424-308. The JCU defense picked off three passes, including one each by Cubero and Stull.
JCU Statistical Leaders -- Offensively, Tom Arth has completed 65 of 104 passes for 893 yards and 13 TD and NO interceptions. His top receiver is Jeff Lerner with 21 catches for 397 yards and five TD, Adam Therrien with 12 catches for 180 yards and four TD and flanker Antione Dunklin with 10 grabs for 116 yards and a TD. In the backfield, Andrew Steinel is the top rusher with 147 yards in 21 attempts (7.0 yards per carry). Ryan DeGeorge is second with 81 yards in 34 attempts with a TD. Defensively, Chris Cubero is the top tackler with 31, including 23 solo stops. He also has four tackles for loss, one QB sacks, two interceptions and both a forced and recovered fumble.
THE YELLOW JACKET NOTEBOOK
The Seasonal Winning Streak -- Baldwin-Wallace College has a seasonal winning streak of 36 years. The streak is third longest in NCAA Division III and the fourth longest in all of college football. B-W has not had a losing season since 1966.
Academic All-America (Verizon) Candidates -- B-W has four possible candidates for 2002 Verizon Academic All-America team, including 2001 first-team Academic All-American Matt Kish. In addition, junior offensive tackle Joe Harbour (3.93 in education), sophomore wide receiver Dave Ehrman (3.69 in business administration) and junior placekicker Kevin Hille (3.38 in business administration).
