Marietta Beats Baldwin-Wallace, 32-31, on Homecoming in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team lost to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College, 32-31, today (Nov. 5) at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea on Homecoming.  The Pioneers scored the final 18 points of the game to erase a 31-13 Yellow Jacket lead.

The Yellow Jacket loss drops their overall mark to 3-6 and ends their 38-year streak of non-losing seasons. With its win, Marietta improves to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in the league.

B-W opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the first quarter when junior safety Jake Knipp sacked Marietta quarterback Jason Vrabel in the end zone and recorded a safety to put the Yellow Jackets up, 2-0.

Marietta then scored on a 20-yard pass play from Vrabel to Chad McDaniel to go up, 7-2, with 3:10 left in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets responded with a three-yard touchdown run by sophomore Brad Rhoden (Galena/ Sunbury Big Walnut) at the 10:52 mark of the second quarter. The run failed on the two-point conversion attempt and the Yellow Jackets led, 8-7.

Less than two minutes later, B-W sophomore linebacker Luke Chronister (Ashland/ Senior) blocked a Marietta punt attempt and the ball was kicked by the Pioneer punter back into the Pioneer end zone, resulting in B-W's second safety of the game and gave the Jackets a 10-7 lead with 9:14 to play in the first half.

Junior All-OAC running back Brandon Hedges (Oregon/ Clay) added to the scoring when he found the end zone on a seven-yard TD run with 4:15 left in the half and the Yellow Jackets led, 17-7. Marietta struck again, scoring on a 10-yard run by Vrabel with 56 seconds to play in the half. Marietta's extra point attempt was blocked and B-W went into the intermission with the lead at 17-13.

The Yellow Jackets opened the second half with a 9:00, 18-play, 98-yard drive, capped by a two-yard TD run by sophomore quarterback Mickey Mental (Olmsted Falls) to lead 24-13 with 3:41 left in the third quarter. Hedges then added to the lead with his second TD of the game on a one-yard run at the 11:06 mark in the fourth quarter to give B-W a 31-13 lead.

Undaunted Vrabel then led three consecutive Marietta scoring drives to take the lead at 32-31 with 51 seconds left in the game. The first was a 75-yard drive, capped off with a one-yard TD run by Vrabel with 7:57 left in the game. Vrabel then marched the Pioneers 92 yards in 1:58 and found wide receiver Jason Curry for a six-yard TD pass with 3:50 to play. The Pioneers then went 80 yards and Vrabel found Nic North for an 11-yard TD on the third drive.

B-W had one final chance to win, but a Mental pass was intercepted by linebacker Darren Marks and the Pioneers ran out the clock.

Offensively, Mental led the Yellow Jacket attack, completing 15-of-29 passes for a career-high 227 yards.  He also ran the ball 15 times for 50 yards and a score.  Hedges topped all B-W runners with 59 yards in 18 trips with two TD.  Senior wide receiver Tom Murphy caught a team-high five passes for 79 yards.  Defensively, senior inside linebacker Joe George (Massillon/ Perry) had a game-high 17 tackles and now has 323 in his career and is seven shy of a B-W career record.

Marietta's Vrabel completed 32-of-52 for 305 yards with three TD and one interception.  Vrabel also led Marietta runners with 49 yards in 14 attempts with two TD.  McDaniel led all Pioneer receivers with 10 catches for 97 yards and a TD.  Defensively, Marks topped the Pioneers with 13 tackles.

Next Saturday's (Nov. 12) B-W versus John Carroll game is the Annual Battle for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl trophy.  Game time at Finnie Stadium is 1:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET football team hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College at The George Finnie Stadium at 2:00 p.m.  This is the ninth game of the regular season.  It is Homecoming at B-W. 
 


        RADIO  -- B-W  campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, will carry the game live from Berea with the pre-game show starting at 1:40 p.m.  Sports Director Chris Feador will call the play-by-play.  WBWC broadcasts all home and away Yellow Jacket games.  The live broadcast can also be heard live via the internet at www.bw.edu/athletics.

The Game -- The Baldwin-Wallace College football team will look to get back on the winning track when it hosts Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea on Homecoming.
        The Yellow Jackets enter this game with a 3-5 overall and 2-5 OAC record following a 17-3 loss to nationally-ranked Mount Union College last Saturday (Oct. 29) in Alliance.  B-W has lost two straight games and needs to beat both Marietta today and John Carroll University at home next Saturday to avoid its first losing season since 1966.
        The Pioneers enter this game with a 4-4 overall and 3-4 OAC record following a 18-3 victory last Saturday at Wilmington College.  Marietta has won two straight games.

The Baldwin-Wallace Versus Marietta Series Notes -- The Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College and the Pioneers of Marietta College have previously met 27 times dating back to the first meeting in 1974.  B-W leads the all-time series, 24-3, but Marietta won 26-0 a year ago  in Marietta. Two years ago in Berea, B-W won, 57-15.

Last Year:  Marietta -- 26, Baldwin-Wallace --0  at Don Drumm Field in Marietta, Ohio on November 6, 2004  -- A year ago, the Marietta College Pioneers beat the Yellow Jackets, 26-0, in Marietta. It was the largest margin of victory for Marietta in the all-time series  The teams were tied after the first quarter and Marietta led at halftime,3-0. In the third quarter, the Pioneers scored touchdowns via a blocked field goal attempt and return and an interception return to take a commanding 16-0 advantage. Marietta scored another TD on a 40-yard run by current senior running back Steven Wagner.  Another field goal in the fourth quarter capped off the day for Marietta.
        Offensively, the Yellow Jackets totaled more yards than Marietta, 327 to Mariettas 263, but turnovers and special teams helped the Pioneers take the victory.  B-W was led by current junior All-OAC running back Brandon Hedges' (Oregon/ Clay)  119 rushing yards on 25 carries.  Defensively, current senior All-OAC middle linebacker Joe George (Massillon/ Perry) led the Yellow Jackets with 12 total tackles.

Scouting the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin-Wallace College -- B-W returns 30 letterman and 15 starters in 2005. Leading the way on defense are senior two-time All-OAC outside linebacker Justin Princehorn (Massillon Washington), Joe George and senior two-time All-OAC end Ryan Lewis (Holland/ Springfield). George leads B-W with 83 tackles, including a career-high 19 in the opener against Allegheny and 14 three weeks ago versus Heidelberg.  Princehorn is second with 58 stops and had 12 versus the Gators and a career-high 16 at Muskingum.  Lewis is third with 51 tackles and tops the team with 16 tackles for loss and has an OAC-leading 11 QB sacks, including a career-high four versus Allegheny. First-team All-American punter Kevin Soflkiancs (Middleburg Heights/ Midpark) averages 40.4 yards per boot in 42 attempts this fall.  Offensively, B-W has used the currently injured Mike DiAngelo (Out for the season), current junior Rob Lewis and sophomore Mickey Mental (Olmsted Falls) at QB with the latter being the starter in the last three contests. Prior to his injury in Week 2 at Ohio Northern, DiAngelo completed 20-of-35 passes for 219 yards with two TD and no interceptions and ran for 11 yards in 11 attempts.  Lewis started twice and was 25-of-53 passing for 302 yards with two TD and three interceptions.  The past three weeks, Mental is 47-of-80 for 385 yards with two TD and five interceptions. Mental has run for 102 yards in 57 attempts.  Brandon Hedges is the top runner with 426 yards in 101 attempts with five TD. Sophomore RB Brad Rhoden (Sunbury/ Big Walnut) will alternate with Hedges and has 229 rushing yards in 59 attempts with two TD. Combined, Hedges and Rhoden have caught 18 passes for 121 yards and one TD.  Senior FB Bryan Pickens (New London/ Norwalk St. Paul) is third in rushing with 132 yards in 38 attempts with one TD and has caught a team-leading 20 passes for 126 yards with three TD.  Senior WR David Peterson (Cuyahoga Falls/ Walsh Jesuit) is second on the team with 12 receptions for 127 yards without a touchdown.  Junior kicker Mike Anthony (Conneaut) is three-of-four in field goals and 10-of-11 in PATs and is third with 19 points.

Scouting the Pioneers of Marietta College -- Marietta returns 28 lettermen and 17 starters in 2005. On offense, senior running back Steven Wagner is one of the best in the OAC and North Region of Division III. He leads the Pioneers in rushing with 643 yards on 150 carries with four rushing TD.  He also has caught 15 passes for 136 yards and one TD. Also in the backfield, Joe Webb has gained 272 yards on 68 carries and has scored three TD.  In addition, Head Coach Todd Glaser has other weapons in QB Jason Vrable who is 115-of-213 passing for 1,350 yards with eight TD and 10 interceptions.  Nic North and Jason Curry are the leading recievers for the Pioneers.  North has 38 catches for 343 yards. Curry has 26 grabs for 357 yards with five TD.  Nick Manson is the placekicker. He has connected on 12-of-17 PATs and six-of-nine FGs for 30 total points.  Defensively, inside line backer Brian Hahn leads the team with 76 tackles and four QB sacks.  Darren Marks is second on the team with tackles with 64.  Also watch for Anthony Banks who has 46 tackles and a team-leading four interceptions.  Jason Curry also punts and is averaging 37.4 yards in 60 attempts.

In B-W's Last Game:  Mount Union -- 17, Baldwin-Wallace -- 3 at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance, Ohio on October 29, 2005 -- The nationally-ranked Purple Raiders of Mount Union College defeated the Yellow Jackets, 17-3, last Saturday (October 29) at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.  The score was tied, 0-0 after the first quarter and 3-3 at halftime.  Mount Union led 10-3 after the third quarter.  Offensively, B-W was led on the ground by RB Brandon Hedges with 52 yards in 13 attempts. QB Mickey Mental was 16-of-24 passing for 127 yards with one interception.  Academic All-OAC fullback Bryan Pickens also caught a team-high five passes from  Mental.  Kicker Mike Anthony kicked a 37-yard field goal for the Yellow Jackets only points.  Defensively, All-OAC middle linebacker Joe George led the team with 12 tackles and DE Ryan Lewis had eight tackles, including his 11th QB sack this season.

In Marietta's Last Game:   Marietta --  18, Wilmington -- 3 at Williams Stadium in Wilmington, Ohio on October 29, 2005 -- In Marietta's last game, the Pioneers beat Wilmington College, 18-3, on Saturday (October 29) at Williams Stadium in Wilmington, Ohio.  Marietta  led 6-3 at the half  and went on to score 12 more unanswered  points in the fourth quarter.  Offensively, the Pioneers were led by RB Steven Wagner's 196 rushing yards on 22 carries.  QB Jason Vrable was 15-of-27 passing and threw a pair of TD passes to Jason Curry. Defensively, Brian Mohn led the team with nine stops.  Also, Eric Workman and Shawn Ellies each picked off a pass.

It is Homecoming at B-W -- Pre-Game ceremonies will begin today at 1:40 p.m., The National Alumni Association President  Jerry Baron '71, Alumni Director Kathy McKenna Barber '70, and Sophmore Class Preident Lauren Hanna '08, will introduce the homecoming candidates, the Jacket Prince and Queen, former Kings and Queens, and the Hall of Fame imductees. 

Tressel Among B-W Hall of Fame Inductees -- The Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet was held last night, where ten outstanding individuals were inducted into the B-W Athletic Hall of Fame.  Candidates in clude Shawn Conley Bottcher '95, James Clardy '93, Charles Geiss '93, Charles Krajacic '82, Amy Chadwick Manco '85, Donals Mohr '47, Kelly Reblin  '93, James Tressel '75, Jennifer Willis '93, and Erik Young '89. 

Joe George is Closing in on Kert Boedicker's B-W Career Tackling Record -- Since 1983, two-time All-American linebacker Kert Boedicker has owned the B-W career record for most tackles with 330. Senior All-OAC middle linebacker Joe George enters the Mt. Union game with 306 career tackles and is 24 shy of Boedicker's record.

Ryan Lewis is Closing in on Pete Primeau's Career QB Sack Record -- Since 1982, All-American defensive tackle Pete Primeau held the B-W career record for the most quarterback sacks with 30. Senior two-time All-OAC defensive end Ryan Lewis enters the Mt. Union game with 27, including an OAC-leading 11 so far this season.

The Seasonal Winning Streak -- Baldwin-Wallace College's seasonal winning streak of 38 years is over.  The streak was second longest in all of college football as well as NCAA Division III.  B-W has not had a losing season since 1966.  Linfield (Oregon) College has the nation's longest streak at 50 years.  With wins against Marietta and next week versus John Carroll University, B-W can claim its 39th consecutive non-losing season (a .500 or better record).

Regular Season Finale Will Be Televised -- B-W's regular season finale at John Carroll University on Saturday, November 12 in Berea (a 1:30 p.m. kickoff) will be televised throughout Ohio on the Ohio News Network (ONN).  The game will be produced by Classic Teleproductions of Twinsburg, Ohio.
