Seven Baldwin-Wallace College Football Players Named to the 2010 All-Ohio Athletic Conference Team

BEREA, OHIO – Seven Baldwin-Wallace College football players have been named to the 2010 All-Ohio Athletic Conference squad announced today (Friday, November 19, 2010).

Headlining the list is senior defensive tackle Keith Darbut (Miami, Fla./ Palmetto Senior), who was named as the OAC’s Paul J. Hoernemann Most Valuable Defensive Lineman and as a first-team All-OAC selection. He is joined on the first-team by senior middle linebacker Ryan Kish (Amherst/ Marion Steele), who was a second-team choice in 2009.  On the second-team were junior safety Ryan Dugan (Mentor), junior tight end Aaron Hurd (Tiffin/ Columbian) and senior defensive tackle Mitch Tulk (Elyria/ Senior), and named to the honorable mention squad are junior defensive back Matt Bowen (Tiffin/ Columbian) and senior defensive tackle Kevin Phipps (Patsakala/ Watkins Memorial).

Darbut, a business administration major, is a four-year varsity contributor who had his best season as a collegian this fall. This season, he had a career-high 43 tackles, including a team-leading 15 tackles for losses of 97 yards and 10.5 quarterback sacks for minus 85 yards.  He also forced tow fumbles and recovered two others.  The highlight of his season came on the first offensive play from scrimmage when he caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Ryan O’Rourke (Avon).  Darbut ends his career with 82 tackles, including 26.5 tackles for losses of 147 yards and 21 QB sacks for minus 131 yards.

Kish, an exercise science major, ends his career ninth on the all-time tackle list with 270 career stops.  He was second on the team this season with 80 tackles, including 14 tackles for losses of 48 yards and 4.5 quarterback sacks. He also led the team with 35 solo tackles, forced two fumbles, recovered two others, intercepted one pass and had four other breakups. The highlight of his season came in a win at Heidelberg University where he stripped the Student Prince QB for a sack and forced fumble, scooped up the loss ball and ran 23 yards for a TD.  A year ago, Kish led B-W with 90 tackles. He was a four-year starter at outside (freshman and sophomore) and then middle linebacker (junior and senior).

Dugan, an exercise science major with a 3.13 grade point average, is a second-team choice for the second straight season. This season, he had 39 tackles, including 28 solo stops, and led the Yellow Jackets with three interceptions. He also had 14 total pass breakups, caused one fumble and recovered another. A year ago, Dugan had an OAC-leading six interceptions. He will enter his senior season with 129 career tackles and 11 interceptions.  His 11 thefts ranks 10th all-time in school history and is seven shy of Dave Coad’s school-record of 18 set between 1968-71.

Hurd, who is a business administration major, led the team in receiving with a career-high 24 catches for 283 yards and three TD. He also was a key blocker for a Yellow Jacket running game that accounted for 149.6 yards per game.  He enters his senior season with 41 career catches for 434 yards and five TD.

Tulk, who maintains a sport management and business administration major with a 3.1 grade average,  had a career-high 39 tackles, including 11.5 tackles for losses of 43 yards and four QB sacks.  Overall, he had 48 career tackles, 14 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Bowen, an accounting major with a 3.622 grade point average, had his best season as a collegian as he was the second-leading tackler in the secondary with a career-high 50, including 33 solo stops, four tackles for lost yardage and one QB sack. He also led the team with 15 total pass breakups and returned two interceptions for TD, including an 88-yarder against Otterbein University which was the second longest interception return for TD in The George Finnie Stadium history.  The two-year starter and three-year varsity contributor enters his senior season with 73 career tackles and 20 pass breakups.  In addition to his All-OAC honor, Bowen has already been named as a first-team ESPN Academic All-District IV selection and is currently listed on the ESPN Academic All-America ballot.

Phipps, an exercise science major and team captain, also had his best season as a collegian as he recorded a career-high 47 tackles, including 14 solo stops, eight tackles for lost yardage and three QB Sacks.  The three-year varsity standout and two-year starter ended his career with 77 tackles, including 9.5 for loss and 3.5 QB sacks.

The Yellow Jackets had an outstanding turnabout season and finished with a 7-3 record after compiling a 3-7 mark in 2009.  With 16 starters returning in 2011, the forecast is for another excellent season for B-W.
