Baldwin-Wallace College Announces 2009 Football Award Winners

BEREA, OHIO -- Baldwin-Wallace College Head Football Coach John Snell announced the 2009 Yellow Jacket award winners at the team’s recognition banquet on Sunday, January 24 at the Strosacker College Union in Berea.

Among the 12 awards presented, eight were given to B-W seniors, including quarterback Anthony Gardner (Rocky River/ Lakewood St. Edward) and safety Ryan Clokey (Massillon/ Perry), who were named the Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, respectively.

In addition to Gardner and Clokey, awards were presented to senior offensive tackle Brett Scarl (North Olmsted), senior defensive end Brandon Fast (Ashland/ Senior), senior wide receiver Matt Dash (Medina/ Senior), junior linebacker Ryan Kish (Amherst/ Marion Steele), junior safety Ryan Dugan (Mentor), junior running backs Kyrell Crook (Columbus/ St. Francis DeSales) and John McGraw (North Ridgeville), sophomore RB Tim Miker (Parma/ Senior), senior defensive backs Pete Taylor (North Olmsted) and Alex Robbins (Canton/ GlenOak) and senior QB Zach Haudenschild (Rocky River).

Gardner,
who recently signed to play professionally in France, was named the Ray E. Watts Most Valuable Offensive Player. The two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference selection (2008 and 2009) completed 170-of-273 passes (62.3 percent) for 1,773 yards and 12 touchdowns and ran for 370 yards in 91 attempts with three TD.

Clokey
was named the Ray E. Watts Most Valuable Defensive Player. He started all 10 games at safety and served as one of B-W’s captains. He ranked second on the team with a career-best 73 tackles and recorded three key interceptions.

Scarl,
a two-time All-OAC selection and a 2009 team captain, was named the Dick Van Almen Outstanding Offensive Lineman. He started all 10 games at left tackle for an offense that ranked third in the OAC at 200.5 rushing yards per game.

Fast, also an All-OAC selection, was named the Outstanding Defensive Lineman. He totaled 44 tackles and tied for the team-lead with 10 tackles for loss. He also recorded three QB sacks and seven hurries.  Fast was named an ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV selection earlier this fall.

Dash
was named the Outstanding Receiver and received the Lee J. Tressel Academic award. He had 20 receptions for 239 yards and also was named ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV this fall with a 3.801 grade point average in criminal justice.


Alex Robbins was presented the "J-A-C-K-E-T" award
by defensive backs coach Tom Watts.

Kish, also a 2009 All-OAC selection, was named the Outstanding Linebacker. He led the team with 90 tackles, including four for loss, and totaled seven QB hurries. He also totaled a team individual game-high of 21 tackles in B-W’s season finale at Capital University.

Dugan,
also a 2009 All-OAC pick, was named the Outstanding Defensive Back. He moved to safety this season after playing primarily at the cornerback position in 2008. He led the OAC with six interceptions despite missing the first two games of the season due to injury. He also recorded 49 tackles and six pass break-ups.

Crook, McGraw and Miker
shared the Bob Packard Outstanding Offensive Back award. Crook led the team in rushing with 559 yards with six TD and had 14 receptions for 134 yards and a score. McGraw had 486 yards rushing and a team-high nine TD and Miker had 543 yards and four scores.

Taylor
was named the A.B. Bonds Outstanding Special Teams Player. In addition to starting all 10 games at cornerback, he was the team’s top return man and averaged 23.7 yards per kick return.

Robbins
received the Eloise Tressel “J-A-C-K-E-T” award. He totaled 48 tackles with a forced fumble and a team-high 10 pass break-ups. Haudenschild received the Roy E. Seitz Yellow Jacket award. He served as B-W’s back-up quarterback in both 2008 and 2009. Each award is given to a player who demonstrates the type of character, integrity, work ethic and commitment that is expected of a B-W football student-athlete.

The Yellow Jackets open the 2010 season on Saturday, September 4 versus traditional rival the College of Wooster on Tressel Field at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.
