Yellow Jackets Dominate Allegheny (Pa.) College, 45-26

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jacket football team won its seventh straight game dating back to last year and opened the 2003 season in fine fashion with a 45-26 victory against non-league foe Allegheny (Pa.) College at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea.

Senior running back Mark Anders (North Olmsted) carried the ball 13 times for a game-high 167 yards with touchdown runs of six, 56 and six to give the Yellow Jackets a 21-0 halftime advantage.  After a Kevin Hille (Willoughby/South) 32-yard field goal, Alleheny scored its first touchdown to cut the lead to 24-7.

Yellow Jackets increased their advantage with two more touchdowns before halftime when senior quarterback Dan Larlham (Brimfield/Walsh Jesuit) ran eight yards for a TD and threw 23 yards to junior wide receiver Gary Kopchak (Brookpark/Midpark) for another score.  An Allegheny field goal one second prior to intermission made the score 38-10 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Larlham scored on his second TD run, a seven yarder, and Hille tacked on the extra point to give B-W its biggest advantage of the game, 45-10.

Anders, who was named as the Dick Miller B-W Outstanding Player of the Game, finished with 167 yards rushing on 13 attempts and caught two passes for 26 yards.  Overall, Anders accounted for 243 all-purpose yards.  Larlham, finished with 96 yards rushing on 15 attempts and completed nine-of-16 passes for 125 yards, including the TD toss to KopchakAnders, senior wideout Dave Ehrman (Strongsville) and junior tight end Nate Wilder (Youngstown/Cardinal Mooney) tied for a team-high with two receptions each.  Overall, the Yellow Jacket offense piled up 532 yards and senior punter Rob Becker (Dover) only punted once.

Yellow Jackets, now 1-0, will have the week off before traveling to Alliance to face three-time defending NCAA Division III National Champion Mount Union College on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m.

The BALDWIN-WALLACE COLLEGE YELLOW JACKET football team opens the 2003 season on Saturday, September 6 against non-conference opponent Allegheny College of Pennsylvania at The George Finnie Stadium in Berea, Ohio at 6:30 p.m.   It is Community Night.


RADIO  -- B-W campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, will carry the game live from Berea with the pre-game show starting at 6:15 p.m.  Sports Director Pete Goesche will call the play-by-play.  WBWC broadcasts all home and away Yellow Jacket games.  The live broadcast can also be heard live via the internet at www.bw.edu/athletics.

B-W vs. Allegheny Series Notes -- The Yellow Jackets and Gators met for the first time in 2002 at Allegheny.  B-W defeated Allegheny 22-2 in the season oppener for both teams. 

Last Year:  B-W --22, Allegheny --2 in Meadville, Pa. on September 7, 2002  -- A year ago, the Yellow Jackets defeated the Gators, 22-2, before 1,968 fans at Robertson Field in Meadville, Pa.  B-W began the game with a 27-yard field goal by current senior placekicker Kevin Hille (Willoughby/ Lake Catholic) for an early 3-0 lead.  Current senior quarterback Dan Larlham (Brimfield/Walsh Jesuit) increased the lead to with a 55-yard touchdown run.  The two-point conversion failed and B-W led, 9-0.  B-W built its lead to 16-0 on a one-yard TD run by Kyle Obendorf before Allegheny tallied its only points of the game on a safety.  In the fourth quarter, B-W closed the scoring when Larlham connected on a 22-yard TD pass to current junior tight end Nate Wilder (Youngstown/Cardinal Mooney).  For the game, Larlham fcompleted nine-o-15 passes for 87 yards and the TD to Wilder.  He also ran for 107 yards and a TD.   Current senior RB Mark Anders (North Olmsted) also rushed for 98 yards on 17 attempts.  On defense, current senior All-American safety Greg Koch (Olmsted Falls) led all defenders with eight tackles and a fumble recovery. Senior DB/ punt return specialist Matt Walker (New Middletown/ Springfield Local) was the OAC Special teams Player of the Week as he returned three punts for 60 yards, including a 29-yarder.

Scouting the Baldwin-Wallace College Yellow Jackets -- B-W returns 39 lettermen and 16 staters in 2003.  The offense is led by QB Dan Larlham, senior running back Mark Anders (North Olmsted) and a bevy of receivers who are led by junior wideouts Dave Ehrman (Strongsville) and Gary Kopchak (Brook Park/ Midpark) and junior tandem tight ends Nate Wilder (Youngstown/ Cardinal Mooney) and Mike Brosovich (Rome/ Orwell Grand Valley).  The line is led by senior Academic All-American Joe Harbour (Upper Sandusky) and returning senior starters Ian Formaz (Wadsworth) and Sean Baker (Hanoverton/ United Local).  The defensive line is "rock solid" with returning starters in senior linemen Rick Schontz (Butler, Pa./ Butler) and Nate Mitchell (Butler, Pa./ Butler) and junior Jason Ludwig (East Liverpool) and Ryan Lewis (Holland/ Springfield).  The linebacking corps will also be solid and return senior Jon Schmitz (North Olmsted/ Lakewood St. Edward) and sophomores Joe George (Massillon Perry) and Justin Pricehorn (Massillon Washington).  The secondary is veteran with senior All-American safety Greg Koch (Olmsted Falls) and senior All-North Region cornerback Tom DeLuca (Norwalk) as its leaders.  In addition, senior safety Jeff Fox (Willoughby South) and junior cornerbacks Matt Walker (New Middletown/ Springfield Local), Sean Athey ( Gahanna Lincoln) and Justin Andes (Canal Fulton/ Canton Central Catholic) all return with varsity experience.  The special teams are also strong and are led by senior punter Rob Becker (Dover), placekicker Kevin Hille (Willoughby Hills/ Lake Catholic) as well as return specialists Anders, DeLuca, Walker, Andes and senior RB Randale Richmond (Akron North).

2002 Yellow Jacket Season Statistics Leaders -- Offensively, Dan Larlham, Mark Anders and Dave LaBahn led the way.  Larlham completed 141 of 216 passes for 65.3 percent and 1,873 yards with 16 TD.  He has an efficency rating of 153.30 and is also second in rushing with 493 yards in 120 attempts with 12 TD.  Anders topped the team in rushing with 864 yards in 135 attempts (6.4 per carry) with a team-leading 13 TD.  He has also caught 13 passes for 99 yards and one TD and averages 20.1 yards in 11 kick returns.  Randale Richmond was third in rushing with 385 yards and three TD.  LaBahn was the top receiver in 2002 with 38 catches for 619 yards and eight TD. Dave Ehrman was second with 22 catches for 264 yards and two TD and sophomore tight end Nate Wilder (Youngstown/ Cardinal Mooney) was third with 19 grabs for 279 yards and a TD.
        On defense, Greg Koch was the top tackler with 84 total stops and a team-leading five interceptions. Safety Jeff Fox (Willoughby South) was second in tackling with 61 stops.  Nate Mitchell was third in tackles with 53.  Bryan Parobek was fourth with 52 tackles and second on the team with six QB sacks. Rob Wittensoldner was fifth in tackles with 50, third in QB sacks with five and first with 19 tackles for losses of 55 yards. Brady Myers was sixth in tackles with 43 and second in tackles for loss with 17 for minus 77 yards and led the team in QB sacks with seven.  Tom DeLuca has the most pass breakups with 14 and is tied for fourth in interceptions with sophomore CB Justin Andes (Canal Fulton/ Canton Central Catholic) with two each.  DeLuca also averages 22.7 yards per kickoff return.  Matt Walker is averaging 9.1 yards per punt return.
        In the kicking game, Rob Becker averaged an OAC-leading 39.3 yards per punt in 28 attempts, including eight that have landed inside the 20-yard line.  Kevin Hille booted 36 of 42 PATs and four of seven FGs for 48 points.

Scouting the Allegheny (Pa.) College Gators -- Allegheny returns 44 lettermen and 14 starters in 2003.  On offense, The Gators are led by current senior two-time All-NCAC signal-caller Bubba Smith, sophomore RB Jamie Sye and senior All-NCAC wide receiver Jon Turner.  In addition, wideouts Brian Woods and Casey Devlin, tight end Evan Kormos and two linemen return, including second-team All-NCAC choice Steve DiGirolamo.  Also back to punt is first-team All-NCAC punter Aaron Polack.  On defense, senior lineman Dave Pisanick will be the leader on the line.  He earned first-team All-NCAC accolades a year ago.  Also, senior All-NCAC defensive back Matt Kromar is back.

2002 Gator Season Statistics Leaders -- Offensively, QB Bubba Smith completed 131 of 245 passes for 1,514 yards with 15 TD.  He was also the Gators second-leading rusher with 220 yards and three TD.  Jamie Sye was the top rusher with 763 yards in 153 attempts with six TD.  He also caught seven passes for 53 yards and two TD.  The receiving corps was led by Jon Turner with 38 receptions for 430 yards and three TD.  In addition, Brian Woods caught 28 passes for  177 yards, and Casey Devlin grabbed three TD passes from Smith in 2002.
        Defensively, junior LB Ryan James led Allegheny in tackles with 66, including eight for a losses of 29 yards.  David Pisanick finished third on the team in tackles with 57 and had a team-leading 11.5 QB sacks and 18 tackles for loss.  Deep back Kirk Rhoades is also back after leading the Gators in inteceptions with four.


THE YELLOW JACKET NOTEBOOK

The Seasonal Winning Streak -- Baldwin-Wallace College has a seasonal winning streak of 36 years.  The streak is third longest in all of college football as well as NCAA Division III.  B-W has not had a losing season since 1966.

B-W Tabbed Nationally in all Five Preseason Polls -- The Yellow Jackets are tabbed anywhere from third to 15th in the five NCAA Division III preseason polls.  B-W is ranked third by the d3football.com Internet Web site, sixth by Street & Smith's magazine, eighth by Sports Illustrated, 10th by The Football Gazette and 15th by Lindy's magazine.

Returning All-American -- Greg Koch is a returning Division III All-American.  He was tabbed as a second-team Football Gazette All-American and as an honorable mention Hewlett-Packard All-American in 2002.

Returning Academic All-American -- Joe Harbour (Upper Sandusky) is a returning second-team Academic All-American.  Harbour carries a 3.919 grade point average in education and history.

Preseason All-Americans -- Greg Koch, Dan Larlham and Rob Becker were all tabbed as preseason All-Americans by several publications.

Returning All-Ohio Athletic Conference Players -- On offense, RB Mark Anders returns as a first-team All-OAC player from 2002 and QB Dan Larlham was a second-team choice.  On defense, safety Greg Koch was a first-team pick and DB Tom DeLuca was a second-team choice.

Returning All-North Region Picks -- On defense, Greg Koch was a first-team pick at DB.  On defense, Dan Larlham was a second-team choice at QB.  On special teams, Rob Becker was a second-team choice at punter and Tom DeLuca was a second-team specialist.

Four Returninng Academic All-District Players -- The four Yellow Jacket players are returning Academic All-District IV players are OG Joe Harbour, backup RB Randale Richmond, and secondary players Jeff Fox and Matt Walker.  Harbour, Richmond and Fox were all first-team picks.  Walker was a second-team choice.

Six Returning Academic All-OAC Players -- Six Yellow Jackets are returning Academic All-OAC players.  They are Joe Harbour, Randale Richmond, Jeff Fox, Justin Andes, Dave Ehrman and Nate Mitchell.  Harbour was a unanimous first-team pick and joined on the first-team by Richmond and Fox.  Andes, Ehrman and Mitchell were  second-team choices.

They Were Most Valuable -- In 2002, Dan Larlham and Greg Koch were the B-W Ray E. Watts Most Valuable Offensive and Defensive Players, respectively.
