Team Academic All-District IV Players
BEREA, OHIO -- Four Baldwin-Wallace College football student-athletes and starters have been named to the 2004 CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-District IV team. The four, senior offensive center Tom Kovacevich (Strongsville), junior middle linebacker Joe George (Massillon/ Perry), senior defensive back Justin Andes (Canal Fulton/ Northwest) and senior placekicker Aaron Redd (Swanton), now each qualify for the CoSIDA national Academic All-America ballot with a chance of earning Academic All-American accolades.
The CoSIDA Academic All-District IV team is selected by Sports Information Directors from the states of Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. Student-athletes must maintain a 3.2 or better grade point average and be either a starter or key reserve. The CoSIDA All-America team is then selected by the CoSIDA Board of Directors, its Past Presidents and members of the Academic All-America committee. Since 1972, B-W has had 22 total selections, including six players who earned the honor twice, including 2004 graduate and offensive guard Joe Harbour and 2003 graduate and offensive center Matt Kish. The 2004 CoSIDA Academic All-America team will be announced on Wednesday, December 1.
For Andes, it is the third time that he has been tabbed Academic All-District IV, and it is also the second time for Kovacevich.
Andes, who carries a 3.73 grade point average in biology and pre-med, is starting in the Yellow Jacket secondary for the third straight year. The two-time Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference player and two-time and three-time All-District IV choice is currently third on the team in tackles with 51, including 30 solo stops. He has also made one interception and has eight pass breakups to tie for the team lead. Has also has 119 career tackles and six interceptions. In the classroom, Andes is a Dean’s List student and a member of the Alpha Lambda and Dayton C. Miller Honor groups.
Kovacevich has played and started in six games despite missing three with a broken hand. The All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC performer a year ago is a two-year starter who has helped the Yellow Jacket offense average 388 yards and 33 points during the last three years. Kovacevich is a Dean’s List student who carries a 3.744 grade point average in math, business and economics is a member of the Alpha Lambda, Kappa Mu Epsilon (Math) and Omicron Delta Epsilon (Economics) honor societies.
George, who carries a 3.6 grade point average in biology and pre-med, has started 31 straight games for the Yellow Jackets and is just one of 11 players in school history to record more than 200 career tackles (currently has 218). The junior has started all nine games this season and leads B-W in tackles with 80, including 41 in his last three games. He additionally has made 4.5 tackles for lost yardage with one interception. In the classroom, George is a Dean's List student.
Redd, who carries a 3.3 grade point average in health and physical education, is the Yellow Jackets starting placekicker. He has connected on 20-of-23 point-after-touchdown kicks and three-of-six field goals with a long kick of 30 yards. His 29 points currently stand third on the team.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action this Saturday, November 13 when they travel to University Heights, Ohio to play OAC and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University at the Don Shula Stadium at 1:30 p.m. Fans can listen to that game live on campus radio station WBWC, 88.3 FM, and via Cleveland commercial radio provider Salem Communications on both WHKW, 1220 AM, in Cleveland and WHKW, 1440, in Warren and Youngstown.
