Fifth at the 6th Annual Bill Sudeck Classic Host by Case
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin-Wallace College men's and women's cross country teams opened the 2006 season today (September 2) and each placed fifth at the Sixth Annual Bill Sudeck Classic hosted by Case Western Reserve University at Squire Valley View Farms in Hunting Valley. It was a solid beginning for each team.
Both the Yellow Jacket men and women improved their showing from a year ago both as a team and individually. Each team improved its final showing by one place from 2005. Individually, five men and seven women improved their times from last season's first meet of the year and on the same course.
Highlighting the meet for the women were two Top-10 finishers as sophomore Ashley Sullion (Grand Rapids, Mich./ Kentwood) and junior Megan Via (Brookville) placed in the Top-10. Scullion finished in sixth place with a time of 19:13.40 and Via finished ninth with a time of 19:42.80. Other top finishers for the women included freshman D'Arcy Hlavin (Berea) in 27th place in 20:12.30, junior Kristen Balogh (Loveland) in 38th in 20:35.50, junior Lindsay Brickner (Lisbon/ Donald Anderson) in 44th in 20:50.50, senior Kelly Staruch (Hinckley/ Medina Highland) in 47th in 21:01.50 and senior Rihana Knotts (Middletown/ Madison) in 63rd in 21:35.40.
Coming across the finish line first for the men's team was sophomore Derek Hills (Fremont/ Ross) in 13th place with a time of 27:12.40. Senior John Townsend (Chardon) was second for the Jackets' and 29th overall in 27:52.10 and freshman Justin Tuckosh (Brook Park/ Middleburg Hts. Midpark) was 31st in 27:53.30. In addition, sophomore Nate Bowen (Fremont) was 42nd in 28:11.00, freshman Jimmy Eberts (North Canton/ Hoover) was 46th in 28:19.90, junior Aaron Apathy (Parma/ Padua) was 55th in 28:39.00 and freshman Jeff Bonezzi (Medina/ Senior) was 69th in 29:15.60.
The men's and women's cross country teams will continue their season next Saturday, Sept. 9 when they travel to Hanover, Indiana to compete in the Madison Kiwanis Invitaitonal. The meet begins at 9:30 a.m. CST.
