Academic All-America Second-Team
BEREA, OHIO — Baldwin Wallace College senior pitcher/third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield) has been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Turchan was a second-team selection.
Turchan qualified for the All-America ballot when he was a first-team CoSIDA/ ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-District IV selection two weeks ago and for the second consecutive year. He helped lead the Yellow Jackets to an 18-12 overall record and 10-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.
In addition to being an ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-American, Turchan ended his career as one of the best baseball players in the history of Baldwin-Wallace College.
At the plate this spring, Turchan led the team with a .392 batting average with 38 base hits in 97 at bats including a team-leading 29 runs scored to go with five doubles, one triple, a team-leading nine homeruns and 36 runs batted in. He also had a team-leading .742 slugging percentage and had two stolen bases in three attempts. For his career, Turchan batted .385 with 145 hits in 377 at-bats with 95 runs scored, 30 doubles, 23 homers and 121 RBI.
On the mound this spring, Turchan was considered the Yellow Jackets' "ace"and had a 2-3 record with a 5.14 earned run average. He made eight appearances, including seven starts. Turchan allowed 51 base hits 37 runs (24 earned runs) and struck out 33 batters in 42 innings pitched. For his career, Turchan made 35 total appearances, including 23 as a starter with eight complete games, and compiled a 12-8 record with a 4.23 ERA and 122 strikeouts in 164 innings pitched.
For his efforts on the field this spring, Turchan was a first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference and second-team NCAA Division III All-Mideast Region selection as well as a unanimous first-team Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference choice. Overall, Turchan was a three-time All-OAC pick, including a first-team choice in 2004 and 2005, a two-time All-Mideast Region pick, three-time Academic All-OAC pick and two-time first-team All-District IV player. As a junior, Turchan earned national honors by the College Baseball Writers Association of America as a Player of the Week and three times during his career earned OAC Hitter of the Week accolades. He also served as a team caaptain this year.
In the classroom, Turchan finished his career with a 3.522 grade point average in athletic training and would like to become an athletic trainer or teacher.
