The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Beats Myers University, 16-6, in Berea


BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Cleveland cross-town rival Myers University, 16-6, in a nonleague game at Heritage Field in Berea.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets are now 18-16 overall. Myers fell to 8-31 overall.

Myers took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning before BW scored three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 4-3 and then took a 5-4 advantage in the third with two more tallies. After Myers cut the deficit to 5-4 in the top of the fourth, BW added two more in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 9-4 lead. Myers scored its final run in the seventh and BW responded with four more in the bottom of the seventh and three more in the eighth.

On the mound, freshman Alex Walker (Canton/ Perry) earned his third victory of the season and improved to 3-1 overall with two and one-third innings of relief pitching. Walker allowed just one unearned run. Freshman Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) started and pitched the first inning and two-thirds and allowed te first four Myers runs (one was earned). Walker was followed by junior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls), who tossed two innings and allowed one earned run and struck out four Mustang batters. He was followed by junior Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic), who retired all six Myers batters he faced and struck out four. Junior Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) also tossed a scoreless ninth inning.

At the plate, three Yellow Jackets each had a pair of base hits to lead the offense. Senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South) had a single and a double, senior shortstop Derek Skapes (North Olmsted) had a double and a triple and senior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) had a single and double. Green played his first game since missing 10 with a shoulder injury. Also, senior two-time All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) crashed his team-leading eighth homerun of the season and the 20th of his career. His 20 career homers rank second all-time.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, April 29 when it hosts first place and Ohio Athletic Conference rival Otterbein College in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field at 1:00 p.m.

Prior to the game, BW will honor its seven outstanding senior players who will be playing in their final home games on Seniors' Day. The seven seniors are Wilson, Skapes, Green, Melito, two-time All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe), Academic All-OAC second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) and catcher Ryan Stassinis (Cortland/ Lakeview).

Between the second and third innings, the College and baseball program will honor BW graduate and former baseball standout Mike Turchan (Mayfield) with his 2005 CoSIDA/ ESPN THE MAGAZINE Academic All-America award.
