Yellow Jackets End Season With Split at Wilmington
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to end its season at Wilmington College today (May 6). The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 12-3, but dropped the nightcap, 2-1, to finish 19-19 overall this season.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Quakers tallied once in the bottom of the third to close to within 3-1. BW scored three mort runs in the fourth and Wilmington added a run of its own in the bottom of the frame and the Jackets' led 6-2. BW broke the game open with a six-run top of the seventh to gaurantee at least a .500 record in 2005-2006.
Offensively, BW outhit the Quakers, 17-7, with senior two-time All-OAC ritghtfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington), senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South) and freshman centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) each banging out three hits. Melito also had four runs batted-in. Senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoa Falls), senior two-time All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe), junior 3B Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Steele), Wilson and Kidd each scored a pair of runs. Farrell and sophomore designated hitter Shaun Slayer (Wooster/ Norwayne) each had a pair of base hits and Slater added three RBI.
On thre mound, junior righthander Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) was solid and improved his pitching record to 6-4 overall. Kynkor threw a complete, seven-inning game and allowed seven hits, three runs (all earned), struck out six Quaker batters and did not allow a base on balls.
In the nightcap, Wilmington scored a run in each of the first two innings and led 2-0 until BW scored its lone run in the sixth as the Quakers gained a split.
Offensively, Wilmington outhit BW, 8-5. Despite the loss, the Yellow Jackets were led by its two-time All-OAC duo of Melito and Farrell as the pair ended outstanding four-year careers with a pair of hits each. One of Melito's hits was his team-leading ninth homerun of the season and the 22nd of his career. On the mound, junior righty Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic) threw the first four and two-thirds innings and took the loss to fall to 3-3 overall. Pille allowed six hits, two runs (one earned), struck out one and walked two. Junior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) relieved Pille in the fifth and tossed one and one-thirds innings of scoreless relief and allowed two hits and struck out one Quaker hitter.
