The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Splits a Twinbill With

St. Vincent (Pa.) College in Ft, Myers, Florida

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a nonleague doubleheader today (March 6) with St. Vincent College of Pennsylvania on the second day of the Yellow Jackets annual spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Yellow Jackets lost the first game, 8-7, as they gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. BW showed resilency as it came back to win the nightcap, 7-5.

In the opener, the Yellow Jackets scored four times in the third inning and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 7-2 lead into the bottom of the fourth. St. Vincent then rallied for a single tally in the fourth and three more in the fifth before its bottom of the seventh heroics won the game and made yesterday's Yellow Jacket "stopper", junior Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) a loser on the mound for the first time in his career.

Despite the loss, the senior trio of first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South), second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) and Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) each had a pair of hits. One of Wilson's hits was his first homer of the season. He also had three runs batted-in.

In the nigtcap, BW scored three runs in the bottom of the third frame to change a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. Then, after St. Vincent tied it with two runs in the top of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets scored the game-winner in the bottom of the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth and helped make junior righthanded pitcher Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) a winner for the first time this season. In addition, senior third baseman/ pitcher Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Marion Steele) relieved Wochele in the seventh and earned his first save of the season.

At the plate, Brown, senior leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) and senior shortstop Derek Skapes (North Olmsted) each had two hits. One of Farrell's hits was his first homer of the season. Farrell and Skapes each had a pair of RBI. In addition to Farrell, senior rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) hit his first homer.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (March 7) when they play MacMurray (Ill.) College in a single nine-inning game at 9:00 a.m. BW then plays Dominican (Ill.) University in a twinbill on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
