The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Splits a Pair of Games Against Urbana
University, 10-6 and 13-2, Today in Urbana
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a pair of games winning the first game, 10-6 and losing the nightcap 13-2, against non-conference opponent Urbana University today (Saturday, March 18) in Urbana.
With the split, the Yellow Jackets are now 7-4 overall and the Blue Knights are 11-8.
In the first game, both teams would be tied at 2-2 after the first inning of play. BW would take the lead in the top of the second inning by scoring a run giving the Yellow Jackets a slim 3-2 advantage. BW broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning making the score 7-2 and would add three more runs in the course of the next two innings taking a 10-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Urbana responded with a three-run sixth inning, cutting the BW lead to 10-5. The Blue Knights added another run in the bottom of the seventh, but the Urbana rally would end there as the Yellow Jackets would go on to win by the score of 10-6.
On the mound, junior pitcher Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) earned his third win of the season and is now a perfect 3-0 for the year. Kynkor pitched six innings allowing 13 hits, five total runs, four earned runs, four walks and one strike out. Junior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) came on in relief in the seventh allowing one run on three hits and no strikeouts.
Despite being outhit 16-7 as a team, BW was led at the plate by senior firstbaseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ Jackson) who went two-of-three with two runs batted in and a run scored. Senior outfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) was one-of-two with three runs batted in and senior second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) also connected on one-of-two attempts with one RBI and three runs scored.
In the nightcap, Urbana led 4-2 after three innings of play. The Blue Knights added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning increasing their lead to 6-2. Urbana put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with seven runs en route to the 13-2 victory.
On the mound, junior Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) suffered his first loss of the season and is now 2-1 overall. He pitched three innings allowing four runs, all earned, on six hits, two walks and struck out one batter.
At the plate, BW was led by Wilson going two-of-three with a run scored. Melito, freshman first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), senior outfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) and sophomore shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele) each recorded a hit in the game.
The Yellow Jackets return to action on Tuesday (March 21) when they travel to Canton to play a single, nonleague game against Walsh University at 3:00 p.m. BW opens its 2006 Ohio Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday, March 25 when it hosts rival Mount Union College at Heritage Field with the first game of a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
