The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Opens its 2006 Season With a 3-2

Win Versus Thiel (Pa.) in Ft, Myers, Florida

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Thiel College of Pennsylvania, 3-2, in the first game of the Yellow Jackets annual spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida.  BW will play 10 games in six days on its trip to the Sunshine State.

The Yellow Jackets scored once in the second before Thiel tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth. BW earned the victory with a two-run sixth before Thiel scored in the eighth.  Keys in the BW victory were good pitching and timely hitting.

Junior righthanded pitcher Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Chagrin Falls Kenston) tossed a solid first six innings to earn the win on the mound. He scattered four base hits and allowed an unearned run as he struck out three and did not allow a base on balls.  Kynkor was followed to the mound by junior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) with a scoreless inning in the seventh, sophomore Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) in the eighth and converted junior catcher/ first baseman Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) threw a scoreless ninth inning to earn his first career save.

At the plate, senior two-time All-Ohio Athletic Conference leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) led all hitters with three base hits in four at-bats, including a double and a run scored. Senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South) and senior middle infielder Derek Skapes (North Olmsted) each had a run batted-in.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (March 6) when they play St. Vincent (Pa.) College in a doubleheader in Ft. Myers with the first game starting at 2:00 p.m.
