The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Losses a Doubleheader to

Otterbein, 4-0 and 4-3

The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader to rival and first place Otterbein College today (April 29) on Seniors' Day at Heritage Field in Berea. The Cardinals won the first game, 4-0, and captured the nightcap, 4-3

With its two losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 18-18 overall and 5-11 in the OAC and end their season next Saturday when they travel to Wilmington College for an OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m. Otterbein is now 21-12 overall and 13-1 in the OAC.

In the first game, Otterbein jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, increased it via a homerun by Bobby Wright in the third and added its final run in the fourth inning to claim the shutout. Cardinal sophomore Dan Remenowsky allowed just two Yellow Jacket hits, struck out 13 BW batters and walked four others. Junior catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) and sophomore designated hitter Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) had the two BW safeties.

Despite being saddled with the loss on the mound, Yellow Jacket junior righthander Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) pitched well after the first inning. He allowed just five Otterbein hits and the four runs (all earned), struck out one Cardinal hitter but walked four others, including three in the first inning and two that resulted in the two Otterbein runs.

In the second game, the Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first and extended their lead to 3-0 in the second before BW scored an unearned run in the third. Senior two-time All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) singled, stole second and came home via successive errors by the catcher (on his throw to second) and by the centerfielder. Otterbein then added a run in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead before the Jackets' made it interesting at the end.

In the bottom of the seventh, Melito doubled and then scored on a single by freshman first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood). following an out and a fielder's choice, a balk by the Otterbein pitcher moved a BW runner to second. A single by Slater scored him to make it a 4-3 lead. A walk then sent Slater into scoring position, but a strikeout by a pinch hitter ended the game.

On the mound, junior righty Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) took the loss as he pitched the first four and one-third innings. Wochele is now 3-4 overall. He was relieved by juniors Brian Pille (Lorain Catholic), who pitched one and two-thirds scoreless innings, and J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls), who pitched a scoreless seventh.
