Baldwin Wallace Sweeps ONU in Baseball, 4-0 and 4-1, in Berea
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference rival Ohio Northern University, 4-0 and 4-1, today (April 8) in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field in Berea.
With its wins, the Yellow Jackets improve to 13-9 overall and 3-3 in the OAC. The Polar Bears fell to 4-13 overall and 0-4 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets scored twice in each the bottom of the first and second innings en route to a 4-0 lead. In the first inning, senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South) doubled home senior rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) who had his BW school-record 41st double a batter prior for a 1-0 lead. Wilson then scored via a fielder's choice to make it 2-0. In the second, senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) scored one via a groundout and Melito scored another with his second base hit in two innings.
At the plate, Melito led all batters with three hits and was three-of-three at the plate and senior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) had two hits On the mound,freshman righthander Alex Walker (Massillon/ Perry), who was making his first collegiate start, earned the win and improved to 2-0. Walker allowed three hits, struck out five batters and walked five in the first five innings to lower his team-leading earned run average to 0.90 overall. Junior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) followed Walker to the mound and tossed two innings of shutout relief for his first save of the season. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.
In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. In the first, Brown scored via a single by two-time All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe), Melito scored via a balk and Wilson scored via a sacrifice fly by Green. ONU cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the fifth inning before BW scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth Brown scored again but this time via a single and RBI by Wilson.
At the plate, Wilson led the way with three hits and a three-of-three performance. On the mound, junior right Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic) stymied the Polar Bears and allowed just one base hit -- a flair over the first baseman's head with two out in the sixth inning -- as he tossed his first career complete game. Pille struck out three, did not walk a batter and allowed just one earned run en route to improving to 2-2 overall.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action next week when they play six games. BW will travel to University Heights on Tuesday (April 11) for an OAC doubleheader against OAC and Greater Cleveland rival John Carroll University at 1:00 p.m., then host traditional rival Hiram College for a single game on Wednesday (April 12) at 3:30 p.m., then travel to University Circle on Thursday (April 13) for a single game at Case at 3:30 p.m. and end the week by traveling to Marietta for an OAC twinbill against Marietta College on Saturday (April 15) at 1:00 p.m.
