The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Splits With Muskingum, Winning
3-1 and Losing 5-3, in its First OAC Twinbill
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split its Ohio Athletic Conference season-opening doublehaeder with Muskingum College in New Concord. The Yellow Jackets won the opener, 3-1, and the Muskies won the nightcap, 5-3.
With its split, the Yellow Jackets are now 10-7 overall and 1-1 in the OAC. With its split, the Fighting Muskies arec 10-6 overall and 1-1 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets scored runs in the top of the first, third and fourth innings and led 3-0 entering the final frame when Muskingum scored its lone tally.
At the plate, senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South) and sophomore designated hitter Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) each had a pair of hits. Wilson, senior two-time All-OAC left fielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) and senior two-time All-OAC right fielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) each had a run batted-in.
On the mound, junior righthanded staff ace Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) improved to 5-0 this season and 9-0 in his career as he scattered four Muskingum hits over seven innings to earn the complete-game victory. Kynkor struck out four Muskie batters and walked just three.
In the second game, Muskingum scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead before the Yellow Jackets scored a single run in the top of the second frame to close to within 2-1. Then the Muskies added a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead. In the top of the seventh inning, the Yellow Jackets scored twice but could get no closer and ended the game with the bases loaded.
At the plate, Melito, Slater and senior center fielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) each had two hits. Melito, Wilson and junior third baseman Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Steele) each had an RBI.
On the mound, junior righthander Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic) suffered the loss and fell to 1-2 overall.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 4 when they host Case Western Reserve University in a single, nine-inning game at Heritage Field in Berea. In addition next week, BW hosts OAC rival Mount Union College in an OAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 5 at 1:00 p.m. and then host OAC rival Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 8 in an OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m.
