The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Loses a Pair of Games to OAC-Rival

Mount Union College, 13-5 and 3-1, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a pair of games to Ohio Athletic Conference rival Mount Union College, 13-5 and 3-1, in an OAC doubleheader at Heritage Field in Berea.

With the losses, the Yellow Jackets fall to 11-9 overall and 1-3 in the OAC. The Purple Raiders are now 14-6 overall and 4-0 in the OAC.

In the first game, Mount Union got on the board quickly scoring four runs in the top of the first to take an early 4-0 lead. The Purple Raiders added to their lead with a run in the second and two runs in the third to make the score 7-0. In the fifth inning, Mount Union's Dave Bogner hit a grand slam as part of a five-run inning to give the Purple Raiders a commanding 12-0 lead. BW would narrow the gap with a two-run homerun by junior third baseman Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Marion Steele) to cut the lead to 12-2.  MUC added a run in the seventh making the score 13-2. Senior outfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) hit a two-run homer as part of a three-run seventh inning, but that would be as close as the Yellow Jackets would get as the Purple Raiders went on to win game one, 13-5.

At the plate, Farrell led the way for BW going two-of-three with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Senior outfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) and Quarando each recorded a hit despite the loss.

On the mound, junior Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township) suffered his first loss of the season and is now 5-1 overall. He pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing seven total runs, six earned runs, with a walk and struck out one batter. Freshman Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) came on in relief to pitch three and one-third innings allowing six runs, all earned, on five hits with four walks and five strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Mount Union took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning before BW would answer back with a run of its own in the bottom of the second. Solid defense and pitching by both teams kept the game at 2-1 heading into the seventh inning. The Purple Raiders added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to increase their lead to 3-1. The Yellow Jackets managed to get runners on first and third with two outs, but a pop-up by Farrell ended any chances of a comeback as Mount Union went on to win, 3-1, for the two-game sweep.

At the plate, senior shortstop Derek Skapes (North Olmsted) finished two-of-three with a RBI. Farrell, senior second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) and senior catcher Ryan Stassinis (Cortland/ Lakeview) each recorded a base hit.

On the mound, junior Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) was given the loss and falls to 2-3 overall for the season. He pitched six and one-third innings allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits with six walks and four strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, April 8 when BW hosts OAC rival Ohio Northern University in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. at Heritage Field.
