The BW Baseball Team Loses Twice to JCU, 8-7 and 10-9

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games to OAC and Greater Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University, 8-7 and 10-9, in University Heights.

With the losses, the Yellow Jackets fall to 13-12 overall and 3-5 in the OAC. The Blue Streaks are now 13-8 overall and 2-4 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Blue Streaks gained a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the second innin g before BW scored four times in the top of the third inning and twice more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. JCU then began its comeback with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-3 and took the lead for good with five more in the fifth for an 8-6 lead. BW added its final run in the sixth.

At the plate, BW was led by senior two-time All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) with two hits in three at-bats, including his team-leading sixth homerun of the season and his school career-record 42nd double. Melito also scored twice and had three runs batted-in. On the mound, junior righthander Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) started and pitched the first four and one-third innings. Kynkor was followed on the mound in the fifth by junior righty J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) who allowed a pair of runs and was saddled with the loss. Fullerton is now 1-1 overall.

In the second game, BW gained a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the first inning. A run by the Blue Streaks in the bottom of the first and a pair by each team in third gave BW a 5-3 lead. The Jackets' increased their advantage to 7-3 in the top of the fourth before JCU came back again. The Blue Streaks scored four times in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the fifth to lead 9-7 entering the final inning. In the top of the seventh, BW scored twice to tie the game, 9-9, but JCU scored the game-winner off of freshman reliever Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere), 0-1 overall, with two outs.

At the plate, junior third baseman Nick Quarando (Amherst Steele) had a double and triple and four RBI to lead the Jackets. In addition, senior two-time All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) had two hits, scored two runs and added two RBI and junior catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) had two hits and an RBI. On the mound, junior righthander Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) started and gave way to Fullerton in the fourth. Fullerton then gave way to Fredericks in the sixth.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (Wednesday, April 12) when they host traditional rival Hiram College for a single game at 3:30 p.m. BW also will travel to University Circle on Thursday (April 13) for a single game at Case at 3:30 p.m. and end the week by traveling to Marietta for an OAC twinbill against Marietta College on Saturday (April 15) at 1:00 p.m.
