The BW Baseball Team Defeats Hiram, 16-6, in Berea


BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated nonconference and traditional rival Hiram College, 16-6, at Heritage Field in Berea. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 14-12 overall. The Terriers are now 8-18 overall.

Hiram took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a bases loaded walk before BW would answer with seven runs highlighted by a three-run homerun by junior third baseman/pitcher Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Marion Steele) to give BW a 7-3 lead. The Yellow Jackets continued the scoring with a pair of runs in the third and five more runs in the fourth to increase their lead to a commanding 14-1. Following a rain delay, Hiram cut into the BW lead with four runs in the six inning to make the score 14-5. BW added a run in the seventh and eighth innings en route to the 16-6 final.

At the plate, BW outhit Hiram as a team 16-12. Six Yellow Jacket players recorded two hits in the game and four others each had a hit. Quarando finished the game two-of-five with the homerun, two runs scored and three runs batted in. Sophomore shortstop/pitcher Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele) went two-of-four with a run scored and a game-high four RBI. Freshman shortstop/second baseman Cody Kidd (Wellington) scored three runs and was two-of-five including a RBI. Sophomore outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) also scored three runs.

On the mound, junior pitcher Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic) started the game and was credited with his third win of the season to improve to 3-2 overall. He pitched two innings allowing one run on one hit with four walks and no strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (Thursday, April 13) when they travel to University Circle for a single game at Case at 3:30 p.m. and end the week by traveling to Marietta for an OAC twinbill against Marietta College on Saturday (April 15) at 1:00 p.m.
