The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Splits an OAC Twinbill With Heidelberg College

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with visiting Heidelberg College today (April 18) at Heritage Field in Berea.  BW won the first game, 4-3 in nine innings, and Heidelberg won the nightcap, 8-4.

With its split, the Yellow Jackets are now 16-15 overall and 4-8 in the OAC.  Heidelberg is now 19-10 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when freshman centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) singled, stole second and scored on a double by senior two-time All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington).  Heidelberg tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the fourth and it remained that way until the eighth inning.

In the eighth, Heidelberg gained its only lead of the game with a pair of runs. BW came back with two of its own to tie it again at 3-3. Melito scored the first run when junior third baseman Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Steele) doubled him home and sent senior two-time All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe), who had singled, to third.  Farrell scored the tying run via a balk.

In the ninth inning, BW scored the game-winning run when senior shortstop Derek Skapes (North Olmsted) reached first base via a wild pitch, moved to second when the Heidelberg pitcher mishandled a sacrifice bunt attempt by junior catcher Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak).  After Skapes was forced out at third base, senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) singled to load the bass.  That set the stage for Melito to hit a sacrifice fly to right field and score Storesina with the winning run.

On the mound, junior righthander Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) earned the victory as he threw his best game of the season and improved to 3-3 overall.  He tossed a complete game, allowing six base hits, three runs (all earned), struck out eight batters and walked seven.

At the plate, Melito led the way by going three-of-four with two doubles, a run scored and two runs batted-in.  His two doubles now gives him a school career-record 45.

In the second game, BW jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brown singled and advanced to second when Melito singled. He advanced to third on a long fly ball and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Farrell. The Student Princes tied the game with a run in the second and took a 3-1 lead with two more in the top of the fourth.

BW cut the lead to 3-2 with a run of its own in the bottom of the fourth when Wilson reached base via an error, advanced to second when Quarando walked, to third on a wild pitched and scored on a fielder's choice.  Heidelberg then put the game out of reach when it scored five times in the fifth to lead 8-2. A two-run single by freshman Rikey Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) in the bottom of the seventh made the final score 8-4.

Despite the loss, Brown and Melito led the way offensively with a pair of hits each. On the mound, freshman righthander Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) pitched the first four and two-thirds innings and was followed by junior J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) in the fifth and freshman Alex Walker (Canton/ Perry) in the sixth.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday (April 22), when they travel to Columbus to play OAC foe Capital University in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
