The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Beats Eastern Nazarene (Mass.)

College, 11-1 and 7-6, on Spring Trip to Ft. Myers, Florida

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team improved its record to 6-2 overall today (March 10) with a pair of victories against Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College, 11-1 and 7-6, in a seven-inning doubleheader as the Yellow Jackets continue their annual spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida.

In the first game, the Yellow Jackets started things off with a three-run first inning. BW would add to its lead with one run in the bottom of the fourth and seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Eastern Nazarane would avoid the shutout with a solo homerun in the top of the seventh as the Yellow Jackets went on to win, 11-1.

On the mound, junior pitcher Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) improved to 2-0 overall, pitching a six-inning shutout allowing four hits, two walks and struck out six batters. Freshman Alex Walker (Massillon/ Perry) came on in relief in the seventh inning allowing the lone run and striking out two batters.

BW had a strong showing at the plate with four homeruns in the game and 14 base hits. Senior outfielder/designated hitter Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) led the way going two-of-three with a homerun, a single, two runs scored and two runs batted in. Junior third baseman/pitcher Nick Quarando (Amherst/ Marion Steele) batted .750 (three-of-four) with three base hits and scored a run. Junior Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) connected on two-of-four with a homerun, a double, two runs scored and two RBI. Senior outfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) went two-of-five with two doubles and two runs scored.

In game two, BW led 4-0 after three innings. Eastern Nazarene tied the game with a four-run fourth inning and would take the lead in the sixth with two runs to make the score 6-4. Senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ Jackson) hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 6-6. Sophomore outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) hit what would turn out to be the game-winning single as the Yellow Jackets went on to win 7-6.

On the mound, junior pitcher J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) was credited with his first win of the season and is 1-0 overall. Fullerton pitched two and one-third innings allowing two runs, both earned, on two hits and struck out three batters. Storesina came on in the seventh inning and was given the save, his second of the season.

At the plate,Farrell led the way hitting his second homerun of the day and finishing three-of-four including two singles, two runs scored and two RBI. Freshman first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgwood) also finished three-of-four with three base hits and one run scored. Wilson was two-of-four with two base hits, one run scored and two RBI. Slater finished two-of-three with two singles and two RBI.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (Saturday, March 11) when they play Eastern Thiel (Pa.) College in a single nine-inning game as BW concludes its annul trip to Ft. Myers, Fla. at 9:00 a.m.
