The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Loses 4-3 to Dominican (Ill.)

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a 4-3 decision today (March 8) to Dominican (Ill.) University on the fourth day of the Yellow Jackets annual spring break trip to the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida.  The loss dropped the Yellow Jackets to 3-2 overall and ended a two-game winning streak.

The Yellow Jackets had a chance to tie the game and possibly win it in the top of the ninth inning as they had bases loaded with two outs, but Dominican reliever Colby Batchelor got the final out to preserve the win. BW had already scored once in the top of the frame.

After Dominican scored its first run in the bottom of the initial inning, BW tied it in the top of the third at 1-1. Dominican then took a 4-1 lead with a three-run fourth before BW closed to within 4-2 with a run in the eighth and 4-3 with its singfle ninth inning tally.

Despite the loss, BW received a solid pitching relief performance from freshman Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) and a pair of base hits from senior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior).

On the mound, sophomore righthander Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) suffered the loss in his first career start as he went five innings and allowed seven hits and four earned runs as he struck out two batters and walked two others.  Jaskowak came into the game in the sixth and allowed three hits and no runs in his three innings and impressively fanned five Dominican batters and did not allow a walk.

In addition to Green's two base hits, includig a double, senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls), senior All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) and sophomore designated hitter Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) each had a double.

After five games, Brown tops all regular starters in hitting with a .444 batting average, in runs scored with five and is tied with senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South) for the most base hits with eight. Green is second in batting average at .375 and is followed by Wilson at .364, senior two-time All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wicklife) at .333 and Melito at .278.  Wilson, Farrell and Melito each have one homerun, Farrell has the most doubles with three and Melito the most runs batted-in with six.

On the mound, junior Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Chagrin Falls Kenston), freshman Alex Walker (Massillon/ Perry) and junior Jim Wochele (Richmond Heights) are all 1-0 overall.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action tomorrow (Thursday, March 9) when they play Olivet (Mich.) College in a single, nine-inning game at 10:00 a.m. in Ft. Myers.
