The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Beats Cleveland Cross-Town Rival

Case, 14-5, in a Nonleague Game in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Greater Cleveland cross-town rival Case, 14-5, in a nonlegaue game at Heritage Field in Berea.

With its win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 11-7 overall. The Spartans are now 3-11 overall.

Case jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning before the Yellow Jackets responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third via a double by senior two-time All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington). The Spartans responded with another run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.

BW gained its first lead of the game when the Jackets' played long ball in the bottom of the fifth inning. BW scored its first run when senior shortstop Derek Skapes (North Olmsted) hit his first homerun of the season to make the score 3-2. Then following a single by senior Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) and then Melito hit his team-leading fifth homer of the season to give BW a 4-3 advantage.

Case then regained its final lead of the game in the sixth with a pair of runs to take a 5-4 lead. BW tied it at 5-5 in the bottom of the sixth and then gained the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh inning with 10 runs as 13 batters came to the plate.

In the 10-run seventh, Melito opened the inning with a double and then score the go-ahead run when senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South) blooped a single into center field. Wilson then scored an insurance run when freshman first baseman and pinch hitter Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) tripled. Kreisher then scored when freshman backup catcher Nick Haught (Cuyahoga Falls/ Walsh Jesuit) was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to give BW an 8-5 lead. Then a walk to Skapes scored another and a Brown groundout scored another run to make it 10-5. A Melito single scored two more to make it 12-5 and Wilson blasted the third Yellow Jacket homer of the day -- his fifth of the season to tie Melito for the team lead -- to make it 14-5.

On the mound, sophomore righthander Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) gained his first collegiate win with three and two-thirds innings of scoreless innings of relief. Shenker allowed five hits, struck out two batters and walked two others. Shenker followed freshman Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) who started and sophomore Steve Miller (Streetsboro/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) who relieved Fredericks. Case junior David Adams suffered the loss in a relief of starter junior J.R. Doolos.

At the plate, Melito led the way with four base hits, including the double and homer and had five runs batted-in. In addition to Melito, Wilson had three hits, including the homer, and senior two-time All-OAC left fielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) and Skapes had two hits each. Wilson and Skapes each had three RBI.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Wednesday, April 4 when BW hosts OAC rival Mount Union College in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. In addition, the Yellow Jackets will remain at home this weekend when they host OAC rival Ohio Northern University on Saturday, April 8 in an OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m.
