The Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Splits an OAC Twinbill at Capital
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with host Capital University today (April 22) in Columbus. Capital won the first game, 4-3 in eight innings, and BW won the nightcap, 10-6.
With its split, the Yellow Jackets are now 17-16 overall and 5-9 in the OAC. Capital is now 13-16 overall and 5-5 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning before Capital had single tallies in the third and fourth innings to tie the score at 2-2. Each team scored a run in the sixth to make the score 3-3. Capital scored the winning run in the bottom of the first extra inning.
On the mound, junior righthander Clayton Kynkor (Auburn Township/ Kenston) took the loss to fal, to 5-3 overall. He threw seven and one-third innings, allowed 12 hits, four runs (three earned), struck out one Crusader batter and walked one other. Offensively, BW managed just three base hits.
In the nightcap, BW scored six times in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead before Capital cut the advantage to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. BW scored a run in the fourth to increase its advantage to 7-2 before Capital scored twice in the fourth and twice more in the fifth to get as close as 7-6. A three-run seventh inning gave the Yellow Jackets the insurance runs they needed to win.
On the mound, junior relief pitcher J.D. Fullerton (Cuyahoga Falls) earned the win and improved to 2-1 overall. He threw one and two-thirds innings and relieved junor starter Brian Pille (Lorain/ Catholic). Junior Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) earned his thrd save of the season with two scoreless innings of relief and followed Fullerton to the mound.
At the plate, senior first baseman Matt Wilson (Canton/ South), senior two-time All-OAC leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe), sophomore shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Steele) and freshman CF Cody Kidd (Wellington) each had a pair of hits to pace the offense. In addition, senior two-time All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) blasted his team-leading seventh homerun of the season and freshman designated hitter Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) hammered the first of his career. Farrell and Kreisher each had three RBI to lead the team and Melito had a pair.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Tuesday, April 25 when they travel to traditional rival Oberlin College for a single, nine-inning game at 3:30 p.m. and then host Myers University in a single game in Berea on Wednesday, April 26 at 2:30 p.m.
