Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Beats Thiel (Pa.), 13-4, in Ft. Myers, Florida as

Junior Dan Melito is Perfect at the Plate

BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team defeated Thiel (Pa.) College, 13-4, to even its record at 1-1 on its annual spring break trip to Ft. Myers, Florida where it plays in the Gene Cusic Classic (March 7).

The Yellow Jackets pounded out 15 base hits and scored runs in seven of its eight at-bats and senior righthanded pitcher Bob Glavan (Mentor) earned his first victory of the season on the mound.

Junior All-OAC rightfielder Dan Melito (Massillon/ Washington) led the hitting attack as he was a perfect five-of-five at the plate, including his third double in two games down south. Melito had four singles, scored once and drove in four runs. He tops the team in batting after two days with seven hits in nine at-bats for a .778 batting average.

In addition to Melito, senior Mike Turchan (Mayfield) had three hits and drove in three runs in the game and is now batting .500 after two days. Junior Matt Wilson (Canton/ Jackson) also had two hits and drove in one run, and sophomore third baseman Nick Qurando (Amherst/ Marion Steele) hit his first career homerun -- a two-run shot in the third inning. Although junior second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) was just one-of-one at the plate, he drew four walks and scored four runs.

On the mound, Glavan gained the win (1-0 with a 5.14 earned run average) as he tossed the first seven innings, allowing nine hits and four earned runs. He struck out two batters and walked three others. Senior Andrew Russell (Indianapolis, Ind./ Eastern Hancock) came out of the bullpen to throw a strong final two innings, allowing three hits and no runs. Russell struck out one batter and did not allow a walk.

On Tuesday, March 8, B-W plays a doubleheader against Dominican (Ill.) University at 9:00 a.m. and noon, and on Wednesday, March 9, it plays perennial Division III power Aurora in a twinbill also at 9:00 a.m. and noon.
