BEREA, OHIO - The Baldwin-Wallace College baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Saturday, April 16, 2005) against 11th-ranked (Collegiate Baseball rankings) and OAC-rival Marietta College at Heritage Field in Berea, Ohio. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 7-2, and the Pioneers captured the nightcap, 9-3.
With the split, B-W is now 14-7 overall and 7-3 in the OAC and ended an eight-game winning streak. The Pioneers are now 21-5-1 overall and 6-2 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets opened a 5-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second inning and one more in the third before Marietta scored twice in the fourth to close the gap to 5-2. B-W added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the first game upset.
In the four-run second inning, sophomore first baseman Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) led off with a single and then advanced when the rightfielder committed an error. He then scored when junior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) singled. Then senior catcher Adam Pajakowski (South Bend, Indiana/ St. Joseph's) reached on a fielder's choice and junior second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Senior shortstop Jason Albright (Camp Hills, Pa./ East Pennsboro) plated Green and Pajakowski with a single and Brown later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield). In the third inning, Storesina singled with one out, moved to third on another Green single and then came around to score via a wild pitch. In the sixth, Turchan plated one run with a double and later scored on another Marietta error.
Offensively, junior leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) led B-W with three base hits and Storesina and Green each had a pair as B-W and the Pioneers each had nine hits.
On the mound, senior lefthander Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine) improved to 3-2 this season as he tossed a seven-inning complete game as he allowed nine hits, two earned runs and struck out three batters and did not walk one.
In the nightcap, B-W and Marietta were scoreless through first three innings before B-W scored a run in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Then Marietta tallied three times in the fifth and once in the sixth to lead 4-1 lead. The Yellow Jackets then tallied twice in the sixth to close to within 4-3, but that was as close as B-W could get to its arch-rival in baseball. The Pioneers then added a five insurance runs and broke the game open in the seventh for the final 9-3 score and a split.
Despite the loss, Turchan did all he could to help his team. He tripled in the fourth inning and scored and added a run-scoring single in the sixth. Turchan's hits were two of B-W's total of four. On the mound, Turchan suffered the loss and fell to 1-2 overall.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Wednesday, April 20 when they travel to Tiffin, Ohio to play OAC-rival Heidelberg College in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
