BW Baseball Team Loses Twice to John Carroll on Spring Break Trip in Ft. Myers, Florida

BEREA, OHIO The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a pair of nonleague games to Ohio Athletic Conference and Cleveland cross-town rival John Carroll University today (Thursday, March 8, 2007) on its annual spring break trip at the Gene Cusic Classic Tournament in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The Yellow Jackets, 3-4 overall, lost 10-0 to JCU in the first game and then dropped the nightcap, 8-4.

In the first game of the doubleheader, JCU scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. The Blue Streaks put the game away in the third with seven more runs and added their final tally in the sixth.

On the mound, sophomore righthander Brandon Fredericks (Copley/Richfield Revere) starting and he suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 overall. Fredericks pitched two innings. A bright spot for the Jackets' on the mound was the pitching of sophomore righthander Jim Palko (Euclid), who came on in relief and pitched four innings and allowed just one earned run and struck out two JCU batters.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets had just three base hits, including a pair of triples by sophomore leftfielder Mike Briskey (Berea). The other base hit came from junior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade-Julienne).

In the second game, JCU scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning to break a 0-0 tie and take a 4-0 lead. BW battled back with four of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie it again at 4-4. But JCU scored four more runs in the top of the sixth to earn its sweep.

On the mound, freshman righthander Justin Novak (Strongsville) stared and suffered the loss to fall to 0-1 overall. Novak pitched five and one-thirds innings, allowed 10 hits, six earned runs, struck out two and allowed two base-on-balls. Senior righthander Bob Storesina (Canton/Glen Oak) came in and pitched one and two-thirds innings, allowed three hits, two earned runs and struck out one.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets piled up 11 total hits. Leading the way was sophomore first baseman Riley Kriesher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) and freshman rightfielder Drew Hanzie (Wooster/ Norwayne) each with three hits. Freshman shortstop Jim Martin (Euclid) added two base hits.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Friday, March 9 when they play St. Vincent (Pa.) College in a single game at 10:00 a.m. in Ft. Myers. BW also will play St. Vincent on Saturday, March 10 in a single game and the final game on the trip.
