The BW Baseball Team Loses to Heidelberg,11-9, and is Eliminated From the OAC Tournament
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost to host Heidelberg College, 11-9, today in the loser's bracket of the 2003 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament in Tiffin. The Yellow Jackets were eliminated from the tourney and end their season with a 24-17 overall record.
In the game, BW led 2-0 after one inning before the Student Princes tallied three times in the second, third and fifth innings and twice more in the sixth to lead, 11-2, entering the bottom of the seventh. The Yellow Jackets then rallied to score seven runs in the finl three innings and had the tying run at the plate when the game ended. Despite the loss, BW outhit Heidelberg, 13-12, but committed four errors.
In the first, sophomore center fielder Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) singled to open the game and moved to second on a single by senior right fielder Brian Keller (Vermilion). The duo then advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by senior shortstop Jim Leffler (Chagrin Falls). The BW runs then scored on a wild pitch and a bases on balls.
With BW trailing 11-2 in the seventh and with two outs, senior center fielder Dave Riede (Cuyahoga Falls/ Walsh Jesuit) doubled, Keller walked and Leffler followed with a three-run home run to make the score 11-5.
In the eighth, BW again struck with two outs. Senior designated hitter Jason Elias (Warren Harding) scored one run on a single by Riede and Keller batted-in two more with a double to make the score 11-8 entering the final inning.
In the ninth, freshman left fielder Dan Melito (Massillon Washington) homered to cut the lead to 11-9 and sophomore second baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield) followed with a single to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. But a fielder's choice and a strike out ended the Yellow Jacket threat.
Offensively, Turchan topped BW with three hits, including his sixth homer of the year. In addition, Riede, Keller and Melito each had a pair of base hits.
On the mound, senior righthander Heath Baker (Perry) suffered the loss and fell to 4-2 overall. Highlighting the Yellow Jacket efforts on the hill was sophomore Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine) who pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit, striking out one and not walking a batter.
The 24 victories by the Yellow Jackets are one shy of the single-season record of 25 which was set in 1991 and tie again a year ago when BW finished 25-12-1 overall. The Yellow Jackets also have had three straight 20-win seasons.
