Baseball Team Splits Two Games with Urbana in Non-Conference Doubleheader
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a pair of games to non-conference rival Urbana University. BW won the first game 6-0 but lost the second 10-9. After todays double header, the Jackets are now 7-6 on the year. Urbana is now to 6-10 on the season. The Jackets will look to improve its record when they travel to Malone College for a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 26th, starting at 2:00 p.m.
In the first game, junior Dale Koler (Brunswick) pitched seven scoreless innings for the Jackets and allowed zero runs on six hits while striking out seven. With the win, Koler is now a perfect 3-0 on the season.
The Yellow Jacket offense was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Pat Shannon (Madison, Connecticut/Daniel Hand H.S.) with two hits. Sophomore second baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield Heights/Mayfield) added two doubles, three runs batted in and scored one run. Freshman infielder Dan Melito (Massillion/Washington) made a huge impact with a homerun and a double. He also had two RBI and scored one run. Junior third baseman Ryan Petraitis (Akron/Manchester) had two singles, an RBI and scored a run.
The Yellow Jackets lost a heart breaker in the second game when junior Johnny Johnson hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to win the game for Urbana.
Senior pitcher Heath Baker (Perry) started the second game and gave up four runs on eights hits and struck out one in five innings of action. Sophomore pitcher Bob Glavin (Mentor) relieved Baker in the sixth inning and gave up two earned runs on four hits. Senior pitcher Ryan Petrusky (Cuyahoga Falls) came in in the seventh inning. Petrusky recorded the loss and fell to 1-2 on the year.
Leading the way on offense for the Yellow Jackets was senior outfielder Brian Keller (Vermilion) with two singles, a triple and one RBI. Shannon went 2-4 with 2 RBI and scored a run. Melito had another solid performance going 3-3 with a single, double and another homerun. He also scored three runs and had one RBI. Senior first baseman Jason Elias (Warren/Harding) had two singles.
The Yellow Jackets will next be in action in a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 26th against Malone College starting at 2:00 p.m. The Jackets will then open up the Ohio Athletic Conference season on Saturday, March 29th when they host Muskingum College in an OAC doubleheader in Berea at Heritage Field starting at 1:00 p.m.
