BW Baseball Team Sweeps Twinbill From Transylvania State (Ky.), 7-4 and 6th-Ranked Wooster, 4-3

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team won a pair of games on its final day of its spring trip, stretched its winning ways to four straight and improved to 6-4 overall by beating NAIA foe Transylvania State (Ky.) University, 7-4, and the sixth-ranked team in Division III, The College of Wooster, 4-3, at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida.

In the opening-game win versus Transylvania State, sophomore righthander Bob Glavan (Mentor) earned his first win of the season as he threw six strong innings and sophomore Mike Turchan (Mayfield) earned his first collegiate save with a solid seventh inning of relief. Glavan allowed seven hits and three earned runs and struck out five to improve to 1-1 overall. Turchan threw a scoreless seventh and struck out one hitter.

The Yellow Jacket offense was led by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and All-Mideast Region shortstop Jim Leffler (Chagrin Falls) with three hits, including his first homer of the season, three runs scored and three runs batted-in. Turchan also had two hits and drove in a pair of runs and senior outfielder Brian Keller (Vermilion) also had two hits.

In the nightcap win against powerful Wooster, junior lefthanded ace Dale Koler (Brunswick) improved to 2-0 overall as he threw a complete-game seven-hitter and struck out 11 batters. Koler allowed three earned runs and walked six batters. The hitting attack was led by senior All-OAC and All-Region first baseman Pat Shannon (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand) as he had two hits, including his second homer of the year, and drove in three runs. The homer was Shannon's BW school-record 27th of his career. In addition, Turchan had his second homer of the season and sophomore catcher Adam Pajakowki (South Bend, Ind./ St. Joseph's) had a pair of hits.

Following its return to Berea on Saturday night, BW will be idle until Thursday, March 20, when it travls to Tiffin to play Tiffin University.
