BW Sweeps a Doubleheader from Ohio Northern, Winning 5-4 and 9-3 in Ada

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Ohio Northern University winning the first game, 5-4, and the second one, 9-3, this afternoon in Ada. The wins improve the Jackets record to 22-14 overall and 10-6 in the OAC and greatly increase their chances for a berth in the upcoming OAC playoffs.

In the first game this afternoon, BW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to senior two-time All-OAC and All-Mideast Region first baseman Pat Shannon's (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand) two-run home run.  Ohio Northern then rallied off of BW ace lefthander Dale Koler (Brunswick) to tie the game at four after six innings.  BW scored the winning run in the top of the seventh when senior Academic All-OAC outfielder Brian Keller (Vermilion) singled in freshman pinch runner Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls).  Sophomore relief pitcher Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine), struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to record is third save of the season.

On the mound, Koler pitched five and one-third innings allowing all four runs (two earned) on five hits and striking out eight.  Senior righthander Dave Hull (Strongsville) relieved Koler and got the final two outs in the sixth to get credit with his second win of the year.

At the plate, Shannon and Keller led the way for the Jackets.  Shannon was two for three with a home run and three runs batted in.  Keller continued his hot hitting by going three for three with a double, the game-winning RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.  Junior third baseman Ryan Petraitis (Akron/Manchester) also had two hits for the Jackets.

In the nightcap, the Jackets jumped out to a 7-1 lead thanks to a Jason Elias (Warren) two run double in the third and another Shannon home run, this time a three run bomb in the fourth.  The two homers on the day give Shannon a team-high eight this season. Shannon went two for four in the second game with four RBI, giving him a total of seven on the day.  Sophomore second baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield), senior two-time All-OAC and All-Mideast Region shortstop Jim Leffler (Chagrin Falls), and designated hitter Jason Elias (Warren) all had two hits.  Elias drove in three runs, and freshman Dan Melito (Massillon) scored twice for the Jackets.

On the hill, senior righthander Heath Baker (Perry) pitched six strong innings allowing three runs on six hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Sophomore Bob Glavan (Mentor) pitched a scoreless seventh in relief.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Thursday, May 1st, when they travel to Hiram College for a single nonleague game at 3:30 p.m. The regular season will conclude this Saturday against Capital University in Columbus in an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 p.m.
