Yellow Jacket Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with Mt. Union
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jacket baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader with arch-rival Mount Union College today (April 5) at Heritage Field in Berea. Mt. Union won the first game, 5-4, and the Yellow Jackets captured the nightcap, 8-2. The Yellow Jackets record now stands at 12-8 overall and 3-1 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Purple Raiders came back from a 4-3 deficit to score two runs in the top of the seventh inning to win the game. A leadoff homerun by junior outfielder Mike Miller tied the game at 4-4 and a sacrifice fly by senior catcher Pete Couch plated the winning run.
The Yellow Jackets began the game on a good note by scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning when senior Academic All-OAC rightfielder Brian Keller (Vermilion) tripled. He then scored when senior two-time All-OAC and All-Mideast Region first baseman Pat Shannon (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand) reached on an error to give BW a 1-0 lead. Sophomore second baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield) then doubled, his fourth straight double in as many at-bats in the last two games, to plate Shannon. Turchan then scored when freshman designated hitter Dan Melito (Massillojn Washington) doubled.
Mt. Union came back to tie the game at 3-3 with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth when senior third baseman Jeremy Saline homered. In the bottom of the fifth, BW regained the lead, 4-3, when sophomore catcher Adam Pajakowski (South Bend, Ind./ St. Joseph) doubled. He scored when leadoff hitter Dave Riede (Cuyahoga Falls/ Walsh Jesuit) had a bunt single and a subsequent Purple Raider error.
On the mound, junior lefthanded ace Dale Koler (Brunswick) was the hard-luck loser as he suffered his first loss of the season in five decisions. Koler went all seven innings, aloowed six hits, struck out seven and walked just two. Offensively, six Yellow Jackets had hits.
In the second game, BW scored once in the first and three more times in the second to build an early 4-1 lead. In the third inning, BW increased its lead to 6-1 when Melito hammered his third homer of the season to left field. Another pair of runs in the fifth gave BW an 8-1 lead enroute to its 8-2 win.
On the mound, Turchan earned the win and improved to 2-2 overall as he went the distance and allowed just three hits and one earned run. He also struck out six and walked three batters. Offensively, Keller led the attack with three hits, including a double and stole three bases. Senior third baseman Ryan Petraitis (Clinton/ Manchester) also had a pair of hits, including a double.
BW will next play on Tuesday when the Yellow Jackets host traditional nonleague rival Hiram College in a single, nine-inning game at Heritage Field at 3:30 p.m. BW will also host perennial Division III power and nonleague rival Wooster on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
