BW Sweeps Ohio Athletic Conference Rival Muskingum, 8-7 and 13-11, Today in Berea
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jacket baseball team swept Ohio Athletic Conference rival Muskingum College, 8-7 and 13-11, today at Heritage Field in Berea. This was the OAC season-opener for both schools.
With its two wins, BW is now 10-6 overall and 2-0 in the OAC. Muskingum drops to 9-9 overall and 0-2 in the OAC.
In the first game, BW scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second and three more in the third to lead 6-2. After each team scored twice in the fourth, BW entered the top of the final and seventh inning leading 8-4. The Muskies then scored three times to make it close before sophomore relief ace Mike Turchan (Mayfield Hts./ Mayfield) entered the game from second base and got the final out of the game.
Junior left-hander Dale Koler (Brunswick) earned the win on the mound, his fourth this spring against no losses. He pitched six and two-thirds innings giving up seven runs (all earned) on 11 hits. He struck out eight and walked four.
The offense was led by senior two-time All-OAC and two-time All-Mideast Region first baseman Pat Shannon (Madison, Connecticut/Daniel Hand) who hit a towering two-run homerun in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2. Shannon finished the game two-for-three with two run scored and two runs batted-in. In addition, freshman designated hitter Dan Melito (Massillon Washington), this week's OAC Hitter of the Week, continued his hot hitting with two doubles and two RBI. Also, senior outfielder Dave Riede (Cuyahoga Falls/Walsh Jesuit) and sophomore catcher Adam Pajakowski (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph's) each had two hits.
In the second game, BW led 4-0 after two innings before Muskingum scored five in the third to take a 5-4 lead. Then BW tallied seven runs in the fourth to lead 11-5 before the Muskies countered with six of their own in the fifth to tie it at 11-11.
In the bottom of the fifth, BW retook the lead, 13-11, when Shannon scored one with a sacrifice fly and Turchan hit a towering solo homer.
On the mound, senior righty Ryan Petrusky (Cuyahoga Falls) gained the victory in relief, his third in five decisions. Sophomore right Bob Glavan (Mentor) pitched two scoreless innings to gain the save, his first of the year.
Offensively, Turchan, Melito and Shannon led the way. Turchan had three hits, including a double and the seventh-inning homer. Melito he had three more hits, including two more doubles. Shannon was one-of-two, a double, and contributed two sacrifice flies and had four more RBI (seven for the twibill). In addition, Riede and senior Academic All-OAC outfielder Brian Keller (Vermilion) each had two hits.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action tomorrow when they travel to University Circle to play Cleveland cross-town and traditional rival Case Western Reserve University in a single, nine-inning game at 3:30 p.m. In addition, BW is at NAIA foe Walsh University for a single game on Thursday (April 3) at 3:30 p.m. and then hosts OAC arch-rival Mount Union College on Saturday at Heritage Field in an OAC twinbill at 1:00 p.m.
