The BW Baseball Team Sweeps a Doubleheader from John Carroll, 11-10, and 11-8, in Berea

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader from John Carroll University, winning 11-10, and 11-8, at Heritage Field in Berea.  With the wins, the Jackets improve to 16-10 overall and 6-2 in the OAC and have won three straight.  John Carroll falls to 14-12-1 overall and 3-5 in the OAC. *NOTE: John Carroll was the home team in both games today but their home field was under construction, so the game were played at BW.*

In the first game, senior All-OAC and Mideast Region shortstop Jim Leffler (Chagrin Falls) drove in freshman Dan Melito (Massillon) with what proved to be the winning run as BW hung on for an 11-10 win.  BW jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Leffler's second home run of the year, but Marietta responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Jackets then scored four in the third and five in the fourth to jump out to a 10-3 lead.  John Carroll rallied to score four in the sixth to cut the lead to 10-8.  Leffler's RBI in the top of the seventh made the score 11-8, and sophomore right-hander Mike Turchan (Mayfield) was able to withstand a John Carroll rally and hold on for the 11-10 win.

Senior right-hander Heath Baker (Perry) pitched five innings giving up seven runs on 11 hits and striking out five to improve his record to 2-1 on the season. Sophomore right-hander Bob Glavan (Mentor) pitched an inning and two-thirds giving up three runs before giving way to Turchan, who picked up his team-leading fourth save and also had two hits at the plate.

The offense was led by senior Academic All-OAC outfielder Brian Keller (Vermilion) who had four hits, two runs scored and an RBI.  Leffler, senior two-time All-OAC and Mideast Region first baseman Pat Shannon (Madison, Connecticut), and junior third baseman Ryan Petraitis (Akron) all had three hits for the Jackets.  Leffler, Shannon and Turchan all drove in two runs.  In all, the Jackets pounded out a season tying-high 18 hits as a team.

With the score tied 4-4 in the sixth inning of the second game, the Jackets scored seven runs, led by Shannon's two run home run. Melito and sophomore outfielder Nick Slater(Wooster) both had two run singles in the inning as well. John Carroll rallied with three runs in the sixth inning to make the score 11-8, but junior ace Dale Koler (Brunswick) came on in relief and recorded his first save of the season.

Senior right-hander Ryan Petrusky (Cuyahoga Falls) pitched five and two-thirds innings giving up eight runs on eleven hits and striking out one to notch his team-leading fifth win.

The Jacket offense was again led by Keller who went 3-4 with a home run and a double scoring two runs and driving in two more. For the day, Keller went seven for nine with four runs scored and three RBI. Slater, Shannon, Melito, and sophomore catcher Adam Pajakowski (South Bend, Indiana) all added two hits for the Jackets.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Thursday, April 17th when they host non-conference and Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University at Hertiage Field starting at 3:30.
