BW Baseball Team Sweeps Twinbill From Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College, 7-0 and 5-2

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team improved to 4-4 overall with a sweep today (March 13) of Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College, 7-0 and 5-2, at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida. BW is on its spring break. The Yellow Jackets end their 10-game trip tomorrow (March 14) when they face Transylvania State (Ky.) at 9:00 a.m. and then play sixth-ranked The College of Wooster at 12:00 noon.

In the 7-0 opening-game win, senior Ryan Petrusky (Cuyahoga Falls) tossed a one-hit gem to earn his first win of the spring. He struck out six and walked two to improve to 1-1 overall on the hill. On offense, BW pounded out 12 hits, including two each by senior All-Ohio Athletic Conference outfielder Dave Riede (Cuyahoga Falls/ Walsh Jesuit), senior Academic All-OAC OF Brian Keller (Vermilion), senior All-OAC and All-Mideast Region shortstop Jim Leffler (Chagrin Falls) and senior All-OAC and All-Mideast Region first baseman Pat Shannon (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand). In addition, one of Riede's hits was his first homer of the spring.

In the nightcap win, senior Heather Baker (Perry) earned his first win of the spring and 13th of his career as he threw five strong innings. He allowed three hits and one earned run and struck out three to improve to 1-1 overall. Senior relief ace Dave Hull (Strongsville) followed Baker and threw two strong innings to record his first save of the season. The BW offense was led by Shannon and senior Jason Elias (Warren Harding) as each player had two RBI. Shannon also had his first homer of the season and the 26th of his Yellow Jacket career.

Following their return to Berea on Saturday night, BW will be idle until Thursday, March 20, when it travls to Tiffin to play Tiffin University.
