BW Splits With First Place Heidelberg College in Berea, Losing 4-2 and Winning 9-8

BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader, with first place Heidelberg College, losing 4-2, and winning 9-8.  The Jackets' record now stands at 19-13 overall and 7-5 in the OAC.  Heidelberg now has a record of 22-8 overall and a league best 10-2 in the OAC.

Dale KolerIn the first game, Heidelberg finally broke a scoreless tie when they tagged BW ace Dale Koler (Brunswick) for four runs in the sixth on three hits, three walks and two wild pitches.  BW responded with two in the bottom of the sixth when senior Academic All-OAC outfielder Brian Keller (Vermilion) drove in a run with a double and freshman Dan Melito (Massillon) drove in a run with a groundout. Keller led the BW offense with two hits.

On the mound, Koler pitched six innings allowing all four runs on eight hits.  He struck out five and had six costly walks.  His record falls to 4-4 on the year.  Senior Dave Hull (Strongsville) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in relief.

In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets trailed the Student Princes, 2-1, until scoring four times in the fourth innning and four more times in the sixth to take a commanding 9-2 advantage into the final inning. But Heidelberg did not make it easy, scoring six times in the seventh and leaving runners at first and second before BW escaped with its win.

Earning the win on the mound was senior Heath Baker (Perry) as he improved to 3-1 overall as he tossed six plus strong innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (all earned), striking out five and walking three. Sophomore Aaron Krieger (Bellefontaine) earned his first collegiate save in the seventh by relieving another Yellow Jacket pitcher.

The hitting attack was led by sophomore Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne), Keller, senior two-time All-OAC and All-Mideast Region first baseman Pat Shannon (Madison, Conn./ Daniel Hand) and senior two-time All-OAC and All-Region shortstop Jim Leffler (Chagrin Falls) all had two base hits. Leffler led the squad with three RBI.

The Yellow Jackets will be back in action on Saturday, April 26th when they host OAC rival Wilmington College in a key doubleheader at Heritage Field in Berea.  It will be Seniors' Day in Berea as nine seniors will wear the brown and gold for the final time.  The first game will start at 1:00.
