Baldwin-Wallace College Baseball Coach Bob Fisher Wins 600th Game as the

as the Yellow Jackets Sweep Dominican (Ill.), 8-4 and 4-0

BEREA, OHIO — Baldwin-Wallace College veteran Head Baseball Coach Bob Fisher won the 600th and 601st games of his 38-year coaching career as the Yellow Jackets improved to 3-1 on their spring trip by sweeping Dominican (Ill.) College, 8-4 and 4-0, today (March 8) in Ft. Myers, Florida at the Gene Cusic Classic.  Fisher, who graduated from B-W in 1963, is now 601-528 in his career.

In the opener, B-W built leads of 1-0 and 3-1 before Dominican scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.  A B-W run in the sixth then tied the game at 4-4. The Yellow Jackets then scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to claim the win and give Fisher his 600th career victory.

In the ninth, freshman Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) led off the inning and reached first base after being hit by a pitch.  Senior third baseman Mike Turchan (Mayfield) then sacrifice bunted Slater to second and into scoring position.  After junior leftfielder Mike Farrell (Wickliffe) walked, junior centerfielder Matt Green (Elyria/ Senior) singled and scored Slater with the game-winning run.  Sophomore first baseman Bob Storesina (Canton/ GlenOak) doubled to score Farrell and Green with a pair of insurance runs and give B-W a 7-4 lead.  Storesina would then score via a single by junior second baseman Kevin Brown (Cuyahoga Falls)Storesina led B-W at the plate with a pair of base hits, two runs scored and two runs batted-in.

On the mound, senior Nick Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) gained the win in relief of sophomore starter Clayton Kynkor (Aurora/ Kenston).  After Kynkor went the first four and one-third innings, Slater came on and tossed four and two-thirds innings of shutout relief to improve to 1-0.  Slater allowed just three base hits, struck out four batters and walked just one.

In the nightcap, B-W scored its first run in the bottom of the first, another run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to win its third straight game on the trip.  B-W received outstanding pitching from senior Aaron Kreiger (Bellefontaine), three hits from Green and Shaun Slater and Storesina each hit their first career homers.

Kreiger tossed a seven-inning, five-hit shutout and struck out three hitters and walked three others.  Kreiger evened his record at 1-1 on the trip and has not allowed an earned run in eight innings pitched.

At the plate, Green was three-of-three with a run scored and an RBI.  Storesina gave B-W a 2-0 lead with his homer in the fourth, and Slater added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth with a two-run shot.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, March 9, B-W plays perennial Division III power Aurora (Ill.) College in a twinbill at 9:00 a.m. and noon.
