BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team defeated Cleveland cross-town and non-league rival Case Western Reserve University, 9-1, today (Tuesday, March 31) in a single, nine-inning game at Heritage Field in Berea. The win was the fourth in the last five games for the Yellow Jackets.

With its win, BW is now 8-9 overall and next plays on Thursday, April 2 against seventh-ranked The College of Wooster at 4:00 p.m. at Heritage Field. Fans can listen to all of the action between BW and Wooster via the Internet at www.wBW.com. With its loss, CWRU falls to 6-18 overall.

CWRU scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. It was short-lived, however, as BW tallied six runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding, 6-1, lead. The Yellow Jackets then scored twice in the sixth and once in the eighth to win for the fourth time in the last five games and improve to 3-0 against non-Ohio Athletic Conference opponents up north.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets outhit the Spartans, 12-8. Leading the way with two hits each were sophomore second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/ Uniontown Lake), senior two-time All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), senior 2-time Academic All-OAC rightfielder Mike Brisky (Berea) and sophomore catcher Ryan Nordquist (Alliance). In addition, Rollins scored twice and Kreisher had two runs batted-in to increased his OAC-leading total to a career-high 30 this season.

On the mound, junior righthanded pitcher Scott Luthman (Celina) started and worked seven innings to win his third game this season against no losses. He allowed six hits, one earned run, struck out two and did not walk a batter. He was followed to the mound in the eighth by freshman Josh Scott (Strongsville) and junior Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls) in the ninth as each tossed a scoreless frame.

Following Thursday’s game versus Wooster, the Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, April 4 when they travel to Ada to play OAC-rival Ohio Northern University in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 1:00 p.m.
