Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Sweeps Doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-8, at Wilmington in Final Game

BEREA, OHIO The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wilmington College today (Sunday, May 4, 2008). The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 8-0, and captured the nigjhtcap, 9-8. It was the final two games of the season for BW.

With its sweep, the Yellow Jackets end the season with a 19-19-1 overall and 9-9 OAC record.  Wilmington ends its season at 10-25 overall and 3-15 in the OAC.

In the first game, BW opened a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning and added four insurance runs in the top of the fifth to shutout the Quakers.

On the mound, junior righthander Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) started and earned the win as he finished the season with a team-high five wins against just two losses.  He earned his fourth complete game and second shutout of the season as he pitched seven innings and yielded just four hits and struck out two Wilmington batters.

At the plate, senior leftfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) tallied four base hits in four at-bats, including a double, two runs scored, and one run batted-in.  Junior catcher Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./ William T. Dwyer) also had base three hits and three RBI.

In the second game, BW scored once in the top of the first inning, but Wilmington answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first for a 2-1 lead.  The Quakers added three more in the bottom of the third frame to lead 5-1, but the Jackets plated six runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead for good at 7-5.  A single run from Wilmington in the bottom of the fourth inning closed BWs gap to 7-6.  Undaunted, BW scored two insurance runs in the top of the sixth to take a commanding, 9-6 advantage. A pair of Wilmington runs in bottom of the seventh were not enough to overtake the Jackets.

On the mound, junior righty Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) started and earned the win and compiled a 4-3 record this season.  He pitched six innings, allowed six runs and struck out three Wilmington batters.  Sophomore righthander Justin Novak (Strongsville) came on in relief and worked two innings and sophomore righty Scott Luthman (Celina) closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning for his team-high second save of the season.

At the plate, senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele) and Slater tallied four hits each to lead the way.  Junior first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) had two hits, including his second homerun of the season and drove in a team-high three.  Senior third baseman Gerry Breedlove (Painesville/ Riverside) and junior Academic All-OAC rightfielder Mike Brisky (Berea) also had a pair of hits.
