Baldwin Wallace Baseball Team Splits OAC Twinbill With Muskingum in New Concord
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader today (Tuesday, March 25, 2008) against Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. BW won the first game, 6-3, but lost the nightcap, 9-4.
The split gives BW a 7-6 overall and 1-1 OAC record. Muskingum is now 10-4 overall and 1-1 in OAC play.
In the first game, BW opened up a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning and Muskingum countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the top of the fifth inning to lead 4-2, but Muskingum closed the gap to 4-3 with a run in the bottom of the fifth. BW added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh and won the first game 6-3.
On the mound, junior righthander Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) started and pitched all seven innings for his first complete game of the season and recorded nine strikouts compared to only three base-on-balls. Jaskowak is now 2-0.
At the plate, senior outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) had another big game for the Yellow Jackets as he went three-for-four and scored a run. He is now hitting .444, good for second on the team. Junior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) also recorded three safeties and one run batted in. Junior Academic All-OAC outfielder Mike Brisky (Berea) scored two runs, and junior All-OAC outfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington), sophomore designated hitter/ firstbaseman Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls), and senior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade-Julienne) all tallied runs for the Jackets.
In the nightcap, Muskingum opened the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and added five more in the bottom of the sixth. The Fighting Muskies were leading 7-0 when BW first got on the board with three runs in the top of the seventh. A Yellow Jacket run in the top of the eighth inning closed the Muskingum lead to 7-4, but the Muskies scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth and the Jackets could not answer back in the ninth as Muskingum won 9-4.
On the mound, junior righthander Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) started and worked five and two-thirds innings and gave up seven runs, but only two of them were earned. He was given the loss and is now 1-1 for the season. Fredericks struck out two Muskingum batters before being pulled in favor of freshman lefthander Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) who pitched the remaining two and one-third innings and gave up two runs (both earned) on one hit.
At the plate, Kidd led the hitting attack with three of BW’s nine hits and scored one run. He now boasts a .419 batting average.
The Yellow Jackets return to action against No. 2 ranked The College of Wooster on Thursday, March 27 in Wooster. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
