Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team is Swept by Marietta in Berea

BEREA, OHIO The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a doubleheader against Ohio Athletic Conference rival Marietta College today (Saturday, April 26, 2008) at Heritage Field in Berea on Alumni Day.  Marietta won the opener, 5-4, and the Pioneers captured the nightcap, 10-7.

With its two losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 17-16-1 overall and 7-9 in the OAC. Marietta is now 18-17 overall and 12-4 in the OAC.

In the first game, Marietta took a 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second inning, added two more for a 3-0 lead in the fourth and scored another in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage. BW then came back to score three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to close to within 5-3. A triple by senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Steele) scored senior rightfielder Mike Brisky (Berea). Radca then scored on an infield single by junior All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) and Kreisher would score via a double by junior catcher Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./ Williams T. Dwyer). Marietta then added an insurance run in the top of the seventh for a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, BW scored a run and had bases loaded before the Pioneers recorded the final out to gain the win.

At the plate, Radca led the way with two hits, including a double and triple, scored a run and drove in Brisky. On the mound, junior righthander Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) started and took the loss to fall to 4-2 overall. He threw all seven innings, allowed eight base hits, five runs (all earned), struck out two Pioneer batters and did not allow a base-on-balls (walk).

In the second game, Marietta jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a single tally in the top of the second and extended the lead to 2-0 with a run in the third. BW scored one run of its own in the third to cut the lead to 2-1 and scored twice more in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. The Pioneers regained the lead with a six-run fifth for an 8-3 advantage before BW came back again. The Yellow Jackets scored three times in the sixth and once in the seventh to get within 8-7. The Pioneers then added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth to seal the sweep.

At the plate, BW banged out 15 hits, including three by sophomore rightfielder Ben Stoper (Medina/ Senior) and two each by junior All-OAC and Academic All-OAC centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington), freshman designated hitter Chris Nealon (Avon Lake), junior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) and senior Academic All-American second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade Julienne).

On the mound, junior righty Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) started and pitched the first four and two-third innings and was tagged with the loss to fall to 3-3 overall this season. He was replaced by sophomore righy Justin Novak (Strongsville) in the fifth and sophomore righty Scott Luthman (Celina) came into the game in the ninth inning.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Wednesday, April 30 when they travel to Hiram, Ohio to play the Hiram College Terriers in a single, nine-inning non-league game at 4:00 p.m.
