Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Drops Two Against Malone in Berea

BEREA, OHIO ó The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost a non-conference doubleheader to Malone College today (Thursday, May 1, 2008) at Heritage Field in Berea on Senior Day.  Malone won the opener, 8-5, and the nightcap, 10-3.
 
With its two losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 17-19-1 overall.  Malone improves to 35-11 overall.
 
In the first game, Malone took a 3-0 lead thanks to a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. BW came right back in the bottom of the first with  a run-batted-in double by junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/Edgewood). Kriesher made the score 3-2 in the bottom of the third with an RBI single. Malone answered back in the top of the fourth inning with two hits and another run to make the score 4-2. Baldwin Wallace took their first lead in the 5th at 5-4 thanks to a Malone error and back to back RBIís by senior outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/Norwayne) and junior catcher Brandon Roberts (Berline Heights/ Milan Edison). In the top of the 6th the Pioneers struck again, capitalizing off of two Yellow Jacket errors and two singles to make the score 6-5. Malone added insurance runs with a two-run homer in the 7th and Baldwin Wallace failed to cross the plate again as they dropped the game 8-5.
 
At the plate, Kreisher led the Yellow Jackets going three-for-three with two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Roberts also went 2-4 with a pair on singles and added an RBI.  On the mound, sophmore right hander Cory Hanawalt (Doylestown/St. Vincent- St. Mary) started and took the loss to fall to 2-3 overall. He pitched six and one-third innings, allowing eight runs (six earned) on eight hits, while striking out four Pioneer batters and walking six.
 
In the second game, Malone took a 3-0 lead after one and a half innings, then BW cut the the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the second when junior Academic All-OAC centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) hit a two RBI double.  Then Malone scored seven runs over the following five innings to take a 10-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning.  In the bottom of the seven, BW cut the lead to the final score of 10-3 when senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/Marion Steele) scored on a RBI from senior designated hitter Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg).
 
At the plate, BW banged out nine hits include two each from Radca, Kreisher and SlaterKreisherís two hits were both doubles.
 
On the mound, sophomore right hander Scott Luthman (Celina) started and pitched the first five and two-third innings and was tagged with the loss to fall to 2-4 on the season. He gave up nine runs (eight earned) on 11 hits, while striking out six and walking two. 
 
The Yellow Jackets will close out the 2008 campaign on Saturday (May 3) when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio for a 1:00 p.m. OAC doubleheader with Wilmington College.
