Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Splits a Doubleheader With Lake Erie College in Painesville

BEREA, OHIO ó The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against cross-town rival Lake Erie College (Sunday, April 6, 2008) in Painesville, Ohio. BW won the first game, 19-8, but fell in the nightcap, 17-8.

The split gives the Yellow Jackets a 10-10-1 overall (2-4 Ohio Athletic Conference) record.  Lake  Erie moves to 5-15 overall.

In the first game, BW used two six-run innings in the and 17 hits to defeat the Storm, 19-8.  The Jackets opened with one run in the first, three more in the second, six in the fifth, three in the sixth, and six more in the seventh innings.  The Storm could only tally four in the first, one in the fourth, and three in the sixth.

At the plate, the Jackets were led by senior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade-Julienne), senior outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne), and junior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) who all had three hits. Luken also tied a game-high with four RBIís.  Eight Jackets had at least one hit in the 11 run victory.

On the mound, junior righthander Jim Palko (Euclid) only gave up four hits and struck out four to move his record to 3-0 in five and one-third innings of work. In a non-save relief situation, sophomore Cory Hanawalt (Doylestown/ St.Vincent-St. Mary) gave up only one hit in one and two-thirds innings.

In the second game, Lake Erie used a 12-run fifth inning to catapault them to victory, downing the Jackets 17-8.  The Jackets again opened a lead in the top of the first inning with two runs, but Lake Erie answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the third.  The 12-run fifth inning gave The Storm a 15-3 lead.  BW tallied six runs in the top of the sixth inning, but it was not enough as Lake Erie added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.

On the mound, freshman lefthander Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) was clipped with the loss to fall to 0-2 overall after four and one-third innings.  He gave up nine runs (six earned) on six hits and struck out four batters.  Sophomore righthander Nate Lance (Cuyahoga Falls/ Cuyahoga Falls Christian Academy) worked one-third of an inning and surrendered three runs (none earned).  Sophomore righthander Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) closed the final one and one-third innings and gave up five runs (two earned) on three hits.

Despite the loss and at the plate, Nealon (Avon Lake) led with two hits.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action Wednesday, April 9 when they host an OAC doubleheader against Otterbein College at Heritafge Field in Berea, Ohio.  The first game is  scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
