Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Loses to Hiram, 15-9
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost to Hiram College, 15-9, today (Wednesday, April 30, 2008) in a non-conference game in Hiram, Ohio.
The loss evens the Yellow Jackets to 17-17-1 overall and 7-9 in the OAC. Hiram is now 11-20 overall.
BW gained an early lead with five runs in the top of the first inning, but the Terriers countered with three runs in each of the second, third, and fourth innings, and another run in the fifth to lead 10-5. The Jackets closed to within one run after they scored a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Hiram extended its lead with five insurance runs in the eight and lead 15-9, a score which would prove to be the final.
On the mound, junior righthander Jim Palko started and took the loss to fall to 4-2 for the season. Freshman lefthander Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) pitched four solid innings of relief as he yielded just three base hits.
Despite the loss and at the plate, senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele), junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood), and senior leftfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) all recorded three hits. Slater also tallied three runs batted-in and scored once. Junior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) also had a multi-hit day with two safeties and two RBI.
The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, May 1 when they host non-league foe Malone College in a doubleheader in Berea at 2:00 p.m. The game is also BW’s “Strikeout Cancer” game. Fans are encouraged to buy a t-shirt for $10.00 that states “Strikeout Cancer with BW Baseball” and all proceeds will be donated to Hogkins and lymphoma research for the KDH Hogkins Foundation.
