Baldwin Wallace University Baseball Team Loses a Doubleheader Against Heidelberg in Berea
BEREA, OHIO — The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team lost an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against rival Heidelberg College today (Saturday, April 19, 2008) at Heritage Field in Berea. Heidelberg won the first game, 18-3, and won the nightcap, 10-6.
With its losses, the Yellow Jackets are now 15-14-1 overall and 7-7 in the OAC and plays again tomorrow (Sunday, April 19) when it hosts non-league foe Walsh University in a varsity and junior varsity doubleheader in Berea at 1:00 p.m. With its two wins, Heidelberg is now 25-7 overall and 11-3 in the OAC.
In the first game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning, but that was the end of the highlights. Heidelberg closed to within 2-1 with a run of its own in the top of the fifth inning and broke the game open with an 11-run sixth to take a 12-2 lead. BW added a run in the bottom of the sixth. Heidelberg added six more insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
At the plate, sophomore All-OAC and Academic All-OAC centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) led with two hits, including a run-scoring triple and a run scored. Senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Marion Steele) added a pair of base hits.
On the mound, sophomore righthander Scott Luthman (Celina) started and took the loss to fall to 2-3 overall. He was followed on the mound by sophomore righty Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City), freshman righty Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth), and senior righty Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg).
In the second game, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning and added another in the third for a 4-0 lead. Heidelberg drew to within 4-1 with a run in the top of the fourth and BW countered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame to lead 5-1. Heidelberg then came back to score four runs in the top of the fifth to tie it at 5-5 and added two more in the sixth and another in the eighth to take an 8-5 advantage. The Student Princes added two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth to finish their scoring. BW added its final tally in the bottom of the ninth.
At the plate, five Yellow Jackets each had a pair of safeties as part of a 13-hit attack. They were Kidd, Radca, senior leftfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne), senior Academic All-OAC second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade Julienne) and junior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion).
On the mound, sophomore righthander Justin Novak (Strongsville) started and pitched the first four and two-third innings. He was followed to the mound by sophomore Cory Hanawalt (Doylestown/ Akron St. Vincent - St. Mary) and then freshman Chris Nealon (Avon Lake). Hanawalt was tagged with the loss, his second in three decisions.
Following its games against Walsh, the Yellow Jackets are back in action on Tuesday, April 22 when they travel to University Circle to play Cleveland cross-town rival Case Western Reserve University in a single game at 4:00 p.m. BW and Case played to a 6-6 tie in 12 innings in Berea on April 3.
Also next week, BW hosts traditional rival Oberlin College in a single game at Heritage Field on Thursday, April 24 at 4:00 p.m. and closes out the week by hosting OAC arch-rival Marietta College in an OAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 at Heritage Field in Berea at 1:00 p.m. The Marietta twinbill also is Alumni Baseball Day at BW.
