BW Splits Doubleheader Against Emerson (Mass.) in Ft. Myers, Florida, Winning 8-5 and Losing 3-1
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a doubleheader today (Saturday, March 15, 2008) against Emerson (Mass.) College at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida during the final day of the Yellow Jacketsí annual spring break trip. BW won the first game, 8-5, but lost the nightcap, 3-1.
The split leaves BW with a 6-5 record on its spring trip.
In the first game, BW opened a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning, but Emerson countered with a pair of its own to tie the game at 2-2. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead at 5-2 with three runs in the fourth. After Emerson cut the lead to 5-3 with a tally in the bottom of the fifth, BW scored twice more in the sixth for a 7-3 advantage. Emerson scored then scored once in the sixth, followed by a BW run in the seventh and another Emerson run to end the scoring.
On the mound, sophomore righthander Cory Hanawalt (Doylestown/ Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) started and threw the first five innings to gain the win and even his seasonal mark at 1-1. Hanawalt allowed five hits and three runs (all earned), struck out six Emerson batters and walked two. He was followed to the mound in the sixth by sophomore Jim Palko (Euclid) and then senior Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) in the seventh.
At the plate, junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference and Academic All-OAC centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) led the 15-hit attack by going three-for-three with two runs scored, two runs batted-in and a stolen base. Junior catcher Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla/ William T. Dwyer), sophomore first baseman Brian Boveington (Stow/ Stow-Munroe Falls), sophomore designated hitter Scott Nealon (Avon Lake) and sophomore shortstop Jim Martin (Euclid) each had a pair of hits.
In the nightcap, Emerson gained a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning and BW tied it at 1-1 with of a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Emerson scored the winning run in the third and added an insurance tally in the fourth.
On the mound, sophomore lefthander Scott Luthman (Celina) started and took the loss to fall to 0-1. He tossed the first five innings, allowed six hits, all three runs (two earned), struck out three and did not walk a batter. Freshman Nick Flanagan (Wadsworth) relieved Luthman and tossed a pair of scoreless innings and struck out one.
At the plate, BW had just five base hits with sophomore twin brother Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) getting a pair.
The Yellow Jackets return to Berea on Sunday, March 16. BW will next plays whe it travels to New Concord, Ohio to play Ohio Athletic Conference foe Muskingum College on March 22 in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
On the spring trip, senior outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) led the team in hitting with a .464 batting average (13-of-28) with Kidd second at .412, Bolte third at .379, senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Steele) at .367 and senior All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) at .351 overall.
On the mound, Palko fashioned a 2-0 record with a 2.61 earned run average in 10 and one-third innings pitched. Junior righthander Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) was 1-0 with a team-leading 2.25 ERA and 12 innings pitched. Junior Jim Jaskowak (Grove City, Pa./ Grove City) had a 1-0 record and a team-leading 10 strikeouts.
