BW Falls, 9-4 and 6-3, in Doubleheader Against Benedictine (Ill.) University in Ft. Myers, Florida

BEREA, OHIO --  The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader, 9-4 and 6-3, to Benedictine (Ill.) University today (Friday, March 14, 2008) at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida during BWs annual spring break trip.

The losses drops BW to 5-4 overall with two games remaining on its southern schedule.

In the first game, BW struck early for a run when junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference centerfielder Cody Kidd (Wellington) singles in the top of the first inning.  He then moved to second base when junior All-OAC first baseman Riley Kreisher /Ashtabula/ Edgewood) drew a bases-on-balls. Kidd would score via a single by junior designated hitter Matt Bolte (Jupiter, Fla./ William T. Dwyer).

The Yellow Jackets extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning with three runs. Senior rightfielder Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg) led off with a single and moved to second when junior catcher Brandon Roberts (Berlin Hts./ Milan Edison) walked. Senior second baseman Nate Luken (Dayton/ Chaminade Julienne) then singled to load the bases. The first two runs scored when Kidd singled, and the third run scored when senior shortstop Nick Radca (Amherst/ Steele) singled.

Benedictine begam its comeback when it scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, tied the game with one tally in each of the fourth and fifth frame and took the lead with a five-run sixth inning.

On the mound, junior righthander Brandon Fredericks (Copley/ Richfield Revere) started and pitched five innings and left the game with the score tied at 4-4. He gave up eight hits and four runs (three earned), struck out two Benedictine hitters and walked two others hits and six runs, all of them earned, and struck out two batters.  Freshman lefthander Nick Flanigan (Wadsworth) worked the sixth and seventh innings and was tagged with the loss.

At the plate, Kidd recorded two singles, scored once and had the two runs batted-in. Shenker had two singles and scored one run and Luken also singled twice and scored once.

In the second game, Benedictine opened the scoring in the top of the first with three runs and added two more in the second for a 5-0 lead.  BW scored twice in the bottom of the third inning to close to within 5-2, but Benedictine scored an insurance run in the top of the fifth to lead, 6-2. BW countered with one run of its own in the bottom of the frame, but it wasn't enough to overtake Benedictine and avert the sweep.

On the mount, sophomore righthander Justin Novak (Strongsville) started and took the loss to fal to 1-1 overall. He tossed four and two-thirds innings. Sophomore lefthander Scott Luthman (Celina) worked the fifth inning without giving up a hit, and sophomore righty Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) came on to work the last two innings and retired the side in both frames.

At the plate, Kidd continued his torrid hitting with two more singles. In addition, Kreisher had two safeties and senior outfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne), junior Academic All-OAC outfielder Mike Brisky (Berea) and sophomore backstop Matt Bush (Grafton/ Midview) each had a hit.

The Yellow Jackets will next play on Saturday, March 15 when they face Emerson (Mass.) College in a doubleheader on he final day in Florida. The first game begins at 9:00 a.m.  BW defeated Emerson, 18-8, in its season-opening game in Ft. Myers on March 9.

Upon returning to Ohio on Sunday (March 16), the Yellow Jackets will begin northern and OAC play when they travel to New Concord and play twice at Muskingum College on March 22. THe first game begins at 1:00 p.m.
