BW Baseball Team Splits Doubleheader with Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College to Move to 4-2 Overall
BEREA, OHIO -- The Baldwin Wallace University baseball team split a doubleheader today (Wednesday, March 12, 2008) with Eastern Nazarene (Mass.) College at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Florida during BW’s annual spring break trip. BW lost the first game, 9-6, and then came back and won the second game, 12-2.
The two-game split gives BW a 4-2 overall record with four games remaining on its spring break schedule.
In the first game, BW jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before Eastern Nazarene answered with two runs in the top of the second frame. With a 3-2 lead heading into in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Yellow Jackets scored twice for a 5-2 advantage. Eastern Nazarene then scored four times in the to of the sixth inning to take a 6-5 lead which it did not relinquish. Three runs in the top of the seventh stanza extended Eastern Nazarene’s lead to 9-5, and BW could only counter with one run in the bottom of the seventh.
On the mound in the first game, sophomore righthander Cory Hanawalt (Doylestown/ Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) started and pitched five and two-thirds innings and gave up six runs on six hits and recorded one strikeout. He was saddled with the loss and is 0-1 overall. Freshman Nate Lance (Cuyahoga Falls/ Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy) replaced Hanawalt in the sixth and then began the seventh before being replaced by senior righty Kevin Shenker (Twinsburg).
At the plate, senior leftfielder Shaun Slater (Wooster/ Norwayne) continued his hot hitting as he went two-for-four and scored one run. In addition, junior third baseman Jake Gross (West Farmington/ Warren Champion) connected on a two-run homerrun in the bottom of the fifth inning and plated another with a sacrifice fly.
In the second game, BW again scored early and led, 3-0 after the top of the first inning. Eastern Nazarene could only answer with one run in its half of the first. BW came back in the second and scored four more runs for a 7-1 advantage. Eastern Nazarene scored a run in the bottom of the second, but was quiet for the rest of the day. The Yellow Jackets continued their rout with two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two more in the seventh.
On the mound, sophomore righthander Jim Palko (Euclid) started and earned his first win of the season as he pitched six strong innings. He gave up two runs on eight base hits and struck out three ENC batters. Sophomore Chris Nealon (Avon Lake) worked the seventh inning and gave up just one hit and struck out one batter.
At the plate, BW was led by four players with multi-hit games. Sophomore second baseman Matt Rollins (Walbridge/ Uniontown Lake) recorded three hits and scored four runs. Junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference first baseman Riley Kreisher (Ashtabula/ Edgewood) had two base hits and one run-batted-in. Shenker continued his spring tear with two singles and sophomore catcher Matt Bush (Grafton/ Midview) had two safeties and scored once.
The Yellow Jackets will next play Southern Vermont College tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in its seventh of 10 games in seven days in the Gene Cusic Classic.
